There are a lot for me for various reasons important SF movies.
Thus, depending on the justification, it is very different which film I would choose as the best or most important.

From an intellectual point of view, the two films 2001 - A SPACE ODYSSEY and COLOSSUS: THE FORBIN PROJECT are two of my favorites.
They include the two most important SF themes for me: Extraterrestrial Life and Artificial Intelligence.
On this occasion to all CD labels: I think it is now time for a overdue CD release of Michel Colombiers 1970 science fiction masterpiece SF-score COLOSSUS : THE FORBIN PROJECT!

But we all here are music fans and music is an emotional thing. From this point of view, I would question 2 other films:
SILENT RUNNING and THE TIME MACHINE(1960).
Since the movie THE TIME MACHINE has a more emotionally hopeful end, I would designate this film as my favourite at this moment.

2010 & ST-TMP

Two thoughtful, weird, slow, yet totally accessible Sci-fi movies. These They are often compared to 2001- A Space Odyssey, but I find these as engaging without getting lost in themselves. They also both have amazing scores.

Ha! My choices exactly. Respect and kudos for 2001 but the sequel warms my heart. (And of course it has Roy Scheider.) I love sense-of-wonder science fiction, which is why STAR TREK The Motion Picture is my definitive Trek film.
STAR WARS I don't really regard as science fiction but rather as space fantasy, but that's no dogma.

Volker

Hmmm, love both these films but never found 2010 slow at all!

My favorite science fiction movie stars Alec Guinness. No, not THAT one. His OTHER one: THE MAN IN THE WHITE SUIT. An odd duck of a scientist invents something wonderful -- or is it? Brilliantly funny, beautifully shot and acted. A happy memory from my childhood, I screened it just a few weeks ago for some friends. Hadn't seen it for many years, but was happy to see it still holds up perfectly.

I just saw this for the first time, Preston. Loved it! Wouldn't have thought of it as a sci-fi film but it really is, isn't it?

And joining Guinness in that great cast, the immortal Michael Gough!

It's 9pm EST and this concludes my little fundraiser for the campaign. What a turnout! 85 contributions to the thread means a donation of $255 to your campaign, Lukas. That should cover the catering bill on your first day of shooting your film. I'll take care of that promptly.

It looks like BLADE RUNNER and 2001 got the most votes for favorite sci-fi films. I enjoyed reading all of the opinions. Thanks, all!

I'm envious you have such money to spare, Adam, because I have barely enough to get by. Good philanthropy on your behalf!

Betcha my cardboard belt is tighter than yours!

Adam, thank you so much for your contribution—a man of your word! I really appreciate it. And thank you to everybody here who participated.

The Indiegogo is going very well, I am very grateful to the community. But there is still a long way to go so I am already working up the "programming" to get us to the finish line!

In the short term, check out the page as I received some blu-rays donated by Warner Home Video—only 1 of each, and some nice sets like the James Dean box set!

AdamB, I missed this thread and I am kicking myself. However, this is extremely generous of you but not surprising. Thank you.

Thank you Peter, Joan and EDW. I thought it would be a fun way for everyone to contribute and we're past the half-way point so it helped!

Bravo Adam.
With so much negativity visible on the internet, it's really comforting to see a gesture and a thread like that.

It's got to be City of Lost Children for me!

(Though I've also heard some wonderful things about Fantastic Planet!)

Favorite Sci-Fi scores are: Alien 1 & 3, Bioshock 1 & 2, Arrival, Remember Me, The Core, Jurassic Park 1 & 2, Robocop, The Fly 1 & 2, The original Twilight Zone scores, and Tomorrowland!

I'm going with Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan. Maybe not the most interesting choice. And of course it edged out The Motion Picture and Star Wars (and The Empire Strikes Back) by a hair.

But this is the movie that I'm always going to watch one more time before I die.

Unless I'm in the mood for Star Wars...

(Hmmm. All movies that I have soundtracks with Lukas' name on them.)

Good luck, Lukas!

Mine has to be CLOSE ENCOUNTERS. I happily donated to Lukas already but if this throws a few more shekels his way I’m happy to participate!

Edit: I see I missed the window of opportunity on this but it was a super cool thing to do nonetheless. Good luck, Lukas!
