Happened to me when I checked my transactions this morning. Three (Unauthorized) $1.00 transactions in Connecticut, New Jersey and Long Beach, California in 2 days. I consider myself lucky to have spotted them with 2 days of their happening. I've since cancelled my card and a new one is being issued. Have YOU ever had instances where your credit information has been appropriated?

3 times, and caught them all the same way you did. Really annoying. Checking one’s statements is more important than ever!

Yes, I have had this happen several times and just last month. Fortunately, our Visa reps called us and texted us immediately. We talked Visa, and they cancelled our card and reissued us a new one in several days.

It is a pain. We have some, but not all, automatic payments taken from our card each month. We had to call them to give them a new number. It is a hassle, but it can happen often, so it is wise to check your bill each day. Also, if you are traveling, but sure to call your credit card reps to let them know this.

I've been the victim of identity theft at least three times. Best Buy just sent out notices their servers were hacked around xmas time last year and ALL my personal information including card number and expiration date, etc were probably stolen.

Edit: I forgot to add my phone number was stolen from me last year. Over and over again within weeks and the company did nothing about it.

Ditto! Once I got passed the mess I stopped all automatic payments and started paying manually. It's just to much of a hassle to go threw that again.

I've been informed by various stores and government agencies that my "information" (it varies each time) has been stolen about a half dozen times. My most frequently used credit card has had fraudulent changes put on it three times, so I'm now on my fourth card number with that card. But each time, it was the card company that contacted me to ask about the charges, before I had ever gotten my bill. That's why I keep sticking with that card issuer.

You're fortunate for that courtesy by the card company, I'm fairly certain it was NOT Wells Fargo! Once when I was at work (at The Empire State Building), a call was forwarded to me from American Express. They wanted to know if I had authorized about $900.00 for clothing at a store called 'Lane Bryant'. I told them, not at all, they fixed the problem and traced the purchaser to a woman in Brooklyn. It was a kind courtesy for them to contact me, and I'd never even heard of 'Lane Bryant'. When I asked a co-worker, she told me it was 'A FAT-WOMAN'S SHOP' for Large Women's clothing!

Yes, a couple of times. Most recently at the Berlin airport last year, where someone skimmed my card when I was withdrawing money from a cash machine (some London-registered company charged it for about $2000). I got the money back eventually, though, after some rounds with my bank.

I've also had my cell phone stolen and abused 3-4 times over the years.

Not to make light of your mobile phone losses, Thor, but aren't you Telenor (Mobile)'s biggest customer? I remember hearing stories of you losing your phone, having it stolen or dropping the thing in a beer, all in bars over the years?

When our house burned down back in the early 2000's, our insurance company hired a disaster clean-up company to clear the debris. In the meantime, the insurance company had given us a substantial advance payment to get us through until the new house was finished.

We had decided to open a new checking account for rebuilding expenses only and deposit that advance. Well, when we got to the bank to do so, we went over our existing checking checking account and determined that it had been cleaned out with several debit card transactions. Fortunately the amount was less than $500.00 and the account was not linked to our savings account.

The bank researched and it was discovered that a second unsigned debit card had been stolen from the burned out house and used until the checking account was depleted. Whomever stole it knew to use it as a credit card and either signed it or wasn't asked for identification. By tracking the locations where the card was sued, we were able to determine how it was stolen.

We closed that account and opened a new one. All we could do was be grateful that we hadn't deposited that insurance check into the original account. Phew.

Ha, ha....I very well could be.

I've lost two phones in bars (one was stolen OUT OF MY FRIGGIN' JEANS POCKET in a bar in Barcelona, the other here in Oslo), and a couple of others in other circumstances. Then they've been used to make expensive, long-distance calls by whoever stole them.

I've also lost several credit cards in addition to those that have been abused.

I'm either very unlucky or very scatterbrained.

Yep. Several years ago someone made a purchase at an OLD NAVY store in California. I live in Maryland. Citi Cards contacted me quickly and I wasn't responsible for the purchase.

No, I don't think you're unlucky nor scatterbrained. Consider yourself fortunate, because for these reasons, this may be why none of your relatives have asked you to babysit their children! wink

So how do you pay for things in this day and age? How do you get cash? Are there even physical banks anymore where you can go and withdraw money by showing a driver's licence or something?

Speaking of which I recently joined a credit union. I went inside to deposit a check. I was greeted by a living person but directed to a monitor set in the wall. On the monitor was a clerk, could only see his face who chatted with me remotely from who knows where. No seats I had to stand facing the wall and type in information and stick my check into a little slot. Very cold transaction, dystopian like.
