An article in The New York Times states the Meghan Markle has been 'hugging the palace guards' at Kensington Palace. Informed that, 'that's simply not done here', she replied, 'I'm American, I hug', and has continued to do so. What would happen if The British started hugging one another? (Leaving Boris Johnson out of the equation).

Oh We do hug.
But soldiers on guard? its frowned upon. Distracts them from their duty. Its just not done.
It would be like going up to a cia man guarding a pres or governor and hugging him. They dont appreciate it.

I hate all that gushy hugging and mwah mwah face kissing shit when you meet people (unless it's the grandkids).
That's NOT the English way.
When did that come into play. I blame the yuppies.
A nice firm handshake is all it takes to introduce yourself to someone and give them a chance to impress you, or you move on.

I think the British regard hugging relative strangers as insincere and reserve hugging for their ghastly sex lives. They do salute at every opportunity, however.

...face kissing shit...

Kev, I think you’re doing it wrong...

In fact, yes, in London they do the continental both sides of the face kiss, which always catches me out. I usually say that up north we do it once but do it properly.

Hugging’s great. I do it frequently.

Air kissing on both sides? One of the wankiest things middle class britain has hijacked from europe. Utterly poncey. Unless its a pretty french, italian or swedish girl, at which point i like it and havent got the heart to tell them its naff!! smile

Yeah, hug loved ones by all means (in fact we should do it more), but all this indiscriminate hugging, it's all a bit USA, & as for all this air kissing, forget it!

I don't do hugs, really. I find it awkward, but then I've been diagnosed with a subtle form of autism so it's not a surprise.

I thought Thomas was from Ireland (by way of Algeria).

Yes the North of Ireland Jimbo, which means thanks to the mad setup we have here I can claim be both! And I'm still a bit bummed my friends from Algeria aren't in this World Cup...

Yes, they played well last time. smile

Would it be a rash generalization to wonder aloud if the Irish are a breed apart from their UK neighbors? I'm thinking more ROI but since I buy my shoes from NI, I must also wonder aloud about their tendency to hug, as well.

I'd like to ask my good friend Will McCrum his opinion on this matter as he's from these parts, but he seems to have dropped off the face of the earth. I think Carson chased him away.

Word has it that McCrum is recording a voiceover for this very thread.
