Informed that, 'that's simply not done here', she replied, 'I'm American, I hug', and has continued to do so. What would happen if The British started hugging one another? Oh We do hug. But soldiers on guard? its frowned upon. Distracts them from their duty. Its just not done. It would be like going up to a cia man guarding a pres or governor and hugging him. They dont appreciate it.
I hate all that gushy hugging and mwah mwah face kissing shit when you meet people (unless it's the grandkids). That's NOT the English way. When did that come into play. I blame the yuppies. A nice firm handshake is all it takes to introduce yourself to someone and give them a chance to impress you, or you move on.
I think the British regard hugging relative strangers as insincere and reserve hugging for their ghastly sex lives. They do salute at every opportunity, however.
In fact, yes, in London they do the continental both sides of the face kiss, which always catches me out. I usually say that up north we do it once but do it properly.
