would you have voted for him for THE GOODBYE GIRL or

Woody Allen for ANNIE HALL

Richard Burton for EQUUS

Marcello Mastroiani for A SPECIAL DAY

or John Travolta for SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER

I think I would have gone with Johnny Travolta. That role had everything, drama, comedy and dang that boy could dance! I think it's his best work.

Burton could be hit or miss but Equus was too good

Who could forget the 'gay' Richard III - a rival to Antony Sher's variant? He sure is the only one left from 'that' boat.

Dreyfuss was the proper choice for Best Actor that year.

Saw Burton on Broadway in that role and he was terrific. Saw the film and he was...eh.

Agreed. With both that and CE3K, Dreyfuss had an unusually strong year.

I would also have loved Jack Nance for ERASERHEAD or Harvey Keitel in THE DUELLISTS. Maybe even Roy Scheider in SORCERER. But none of those were nominated.
