Yes, club releases more frequent with more attention given to premieres from the 50's,60's and 70's. Of course, my number one wish right now is an expanded THE COWBOYS from the 70's.

Agreed, Cody! I miss the days when Varèse was putting out so many Golden/Silver age titles.

Please no.
. I guess some people enjoy mediocrity.smile

It sure would be nice if Varese would remember those faithful fans who started buying from Varese in 1978 and on! I know the 80s on sell the best, but would it hurt to issue just one Golden or Silver Age CD now and then? Don't forget your roots Varese and those fans who got you started.

Yes, and occasional premiere CD from the 40s, 50s, 60s and 70s would be welcomed. From 1978 to maybe 2008 I bought a ton of Varese CDs, about nothing the past 10 years or so.

Happy 40th Varese!

. Nice to see that there are still people around who know the difference between music and "generic noise". We will see on Monday if the new owners of Varese will cater to those who love "generic noise" or those who love melodic music. I was very pleased and surprised that Varese released Rachel Portman's THE STORYTELLER.

So everything from between 1980 and 2018 is generic noise?

LOL

. At least 75 percent. Can't blame the composers entirely. They give the film producers what they want.

Well last nights concert in Edinburgh was superb!
Incredible performances from the RSNO showcasing the range of music released over the 40 years. Robert Townson presented each selection and provided lots of terrific and unseen photos to go along with the music. He said he loves introducing new music to people and I can see that’s what it’s really been all about, over those years. He really needs to write a book now!
Rachel Portman was a delight and David Arnold was on form adding insights from their seats in the audience!
Glasgow are in for a treat tonight. I wish I was there too.

Couldn't agree more, Roy. I went to the Glasgow concert last night. It was a brilliant concert and I thought that the selection of pieces really reflected Varese's varied output over the years. It was impossible to pick a favourite really as all pieces were so expertly performed by the great RSNO and suitably introduced by Robert. I loved all the Goldsmith pieces (of course!), To Kill A Mockingbird and the grand finale of Independence Day.

David Arnold, Patrick Doyle and Rachel Portman were also in attendance in Glasgow and I couldn't believe my luck when I saw all three of them with Diego Navarro and Robert Townson doing a photo shoot prior to the concert which enabled me to get my program signed by all 5 of them. And to top it all, at the interval David, Patrick and Rachel were standing in the foyer happily talking to fans which meant I managed to get my photo taken with all three composers individually and also chat to them for a couple of minutes. All three came across as very nice and friendly and David is the type of guy you'd happily have a drink with in the pub! I thought that was a very nice thing to do as they could've easily enjoyed a drink or two backstage instead. I'm also grateful for Robert for acknowledging my 13-year old son again when he passed him at the interval, having recognised him again from the photo shoot earlier. Robert, if you're reading this, your wee gesture meant a lot to him!

Robert, thanks a lot for organising this concert in Glasgow. It really is great to have such fantastic concerts in Glasgow and I hope it's not the last one.

"I thought the first image posted above was the cover art for Varese/Sarabande: A 40th Anniversary Celebration 4 CD set"

***

I trust your mind is now set at ease on this point. Except, of course, for the amount of discs in the box set. I'd have preferred a 4-disc set as of olde, but being a glass is half full kind of guy, I'm not letting that spoil my enjoyment of the two discs herein.

That said, I do have one quibble with the packaging. Carter Burwell is a fine composer, but by now it's long since time that Varese should be aware that he did not write the RAISING ARIZONA selection, "Way Out There," which is in fact a piece created (under another title) by the late Pete Seeger for his wonderful Folkways album, THE GOOFING OFF SUITE.
