I've noticed over the last few months that it is becoming harder to find recent releases of soundtrack albums to very popular films such as:

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes
Captain America First Avenger
Avengers (2012)
Tree of Life

Has anyone else noticed this trend and perhaps knows what is going on? Has anyone other examples? Are labels like Sony Classical pressing a smaller number of CDs?

Well as we all know a lot of main stream film scores have gone OOP "overnight". John Carter, Tomorrowland, etc. So yeah, it appears they are under pressing and not keeping titles in circulation like they used to.

As an indecisive "Libra" over the past couple of years I've learned that if I really want something to buy it asap.

Not gonna lie though, sometimes questing for these OOP items is a fun challenge. It's also pretty satisfying when you can grab one at a fair price.

It's funny that albums that aren't released by the major soundtrack labels and aren't technically "limited" are often the ones that go quietly OOP because no one's paying attention to them. It doesn't help that some of these (like John Carter and Tomorrowland) were attached to flop movies, and any sort of tie-in merchandise attached to a flop movie will quickly stop being manufactured.

The lesson is...if it's a score for a movie currently in theaters you might want to own, it's better to get it RIGHT NOW. Unlike labels like Intrada, LLL or others, you will not receive a helpful "low quantities" warning on the FSM boards when a score like John Carter is quickly vanishing. I was surprised to learn that Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes has become scarce, and that movie was released four years ago! eek

Yeah I was going to jump on some recent titles but unexpected bills got in the way. It was nice when you could pick up a score many many years later and usually at bargain prices.

I've been really surpised by some of these as well. Thankfully I've picked up most of these that I wanted that quickly and quietly went OOP... So far.

I'm wondering if Solo will be next. It is Star Wars, but there's been a lot of bad press about it not meeting expectations. And Disney doesn't often keep pressing CDs for flops (Tomorrowland, John Carter, etcetera).

Or for hits it seems. Doyle's Thor is now quiet expensive to buy on the secondary market. War Horse is heading that way as well...

Wow, you're right! It seems a lot of Marvel's Phase One scores are tough to find. I checked Amazon and they had one copy of Captain America: The First Avenger for $200! It's a good thing I've picked up my Marvel scores when they come out.

I think my post in the Thor thread necessitated his post. wink

Score albums have always been a fringe market. But now CDs are also fast becoming a fringe market. The combination means you can't expect any score CD to be available for very long.

I just grabbed a whole bunch of mainstream scores and put it on my Best Buy card. Snooze and you lose has never been more true.

They were all reissued with new artwork last month in Japan for the 10th anniversary. Not Intrada’s Avengers though, that remains relegated to Amazon on demand

Most of them can be found here it seems.

John Carter's disappearance didn't surprise me, since Amazon listed it as "Limited Edition" (the same for Big Hero 6, for those on the lookout). It's Tomorrowland, Dawn of, and similar scores without such a listing that took me by surprise, but it may just be a result of selling a certain batch or reaching that golden 14,999 AFM low-fat royalty limit, plus all of these recent vinyl/digital releases pose no reassurance as to Disney's future soundtracking plans.

  • I checked Amazon and they had one copy of Captain America: The First Avenger for $200!

From one seller, who clearly thought Economics 101 was an easy A.

Some Italian soundtrack CD's are getting difficult to find especially with limited runs of only 300 copies.

Wasn't surprised about Tomorrowland, as I recall it disappeared in a blink of an eye?! I wonder what Giacchino thinks of his scores disappearing so fast?

How many of Marvel's scores fall under the "AFM ow-fat royalty limit"? Thor was recorded with the LSO and since has gone OOP. Would be useful to know, as it is likely that score from Marvel's Phase 2 will go the way of Phase 1.

But it wasn't listed as "Limited Edition" as John Carter was. As for Marvel, it may just be a typical practice for Disney to abandon earlier titles, just like they do with their "Art of" books (which if you want to talk about expensive scalping, great googily moogily!).

As for Dawn of, could Giacc-Giacc have a contract stipulation regarding this?
