Does anyone have pictures? Not just of the performance, which would be great, but even of the backstage flurry of fans meeting and greeting, each other as well as the maestro? I thought I'd seen some posted on the board(s) at the time, but looking back at old threads, I think I'm wrong about that. I don't have any, and recently got to peek at just a couple. What a treat to see them. Anyone else interested in digging up some old shots, scanning, if necessary, and sharing? I'd start, but I'm empty-handed, I fear.

Wait, you went to this, too? I went on night one, if that means anything to you.

Yes, we’ve talked about this before. It’s where Jerry left me a voice memo on my cell.

I have no idea though if it was the first night, though FWIW I don’t remember thinking “whoa what’s Wil Wheaton doing here.”

Haha I have no memory of this conversation!

As far as I recall there were no pictures taken. However, what's in the mind's eye remains vivid. Including the surprise parking garage meet-up, M. Lorien. cool

PS

It must have been the first night all right, Mike S. Shaun took off the next day, even I remember that!

Permit me to hijack your thread by posting some if not all of them old threads. Always wanted to compile the whole lot and this new thread is a perfect excuse. It will be a work in progress i.e. am gonna insert them randomly, rearrange and hopefully end up with a Detroit flow.

I was there at the Friday night show but sadly (for me) no pictures. Still have my program and ticket stub though.

It's funny how this concert - in Detroit of all places - seems to be a touchstone for so many around here. I'm wondering why that is. Timing?

I didn't connect to it through anyone here. A good buddy of mine randomly called one night and said "You like movie music, right," then explained about the tickets and did I want them because he had no use for them. I don't even know how he'd gotten them when I hadn't heard a thing about it. But I had just graduated college and was in a bit of that post-college malaise/depression that festered all that next year. The concert was one of the brightest spot of what was generally not a great period in my life.

Oh wow, had you posted on any of those threads? I scanned over several last night. Lots of very moving comments. It is hard to believe there were others like yourself there and that we didn't hook up in some way. Eighteen years to the month later and we're still talking about it and I'm feeling a sense of frustration. "Back to Cyberspace," indeed. It's not like we've been sometime correspondents either all this time.

Timing...coincidence...happenstance...kharma...cosmic forces doing their thing...what an understatement. And yes, Detroit of all the gin joints in all the places in all the world. Those threads--the FSMessageboard had been going through a lengthy retooling so a decent part of the community just migrated over to moviemusic.com and picked up right from where we had left off. After "ingratiating" ourselves [roll eyes] among its natives. Were you there? Ah, I see you've been here since 2004.

Yep Howard. I’m all over those threads under the name HAL2000.

By the way. Posting under my other user name (just some silly way I signed in from a different computer). RNelson, Giant Robot, HAL 2000... all me.

Telepathic.
Serlingesque.
Talosianistic.

All through this project I was wondering whatever came of HAL 2000 he was all over those threads. Thing of it is, GR, being the Net and all, I'm just gonna havta take your word for it.

A revelation after all these years. Who knew? This is delicious. Reminds me of the end of Up The Down Staircase ("I'm 'Me'"). cool

Whoa this is taking on a life of its own again, turning into a freakin' retro narrative. Pictures from Detroit?! You gotta be kidding, are you going to post 'em? Btw last night went rummaging and found a hard copy of the first part of the FACT or FICTION? referenced above. It had been posted right here on the FSMessageboard just before the place went dark.

No problem Howard. But they are all me. I'll share this bit of poignancy regarding this concert. That concert was in June of 2000 and I'd successfully made my father-in-law a true Goldsmith admirer and I had always hoped to take him to see a live concert. But he passed away a year before Detroit so I have that deep regret that we didn't have that moment together. I often think of how it would have been. The only thing that could have made it better is if Goldsmith had preformed "The Trees" from Medicine Man (my father-in-law's favorite piece of Goldsmith).

Hmm. "...passed away a year before Detroit." That has a familiar ring. Too familiar. And everything to do with the references to Canada. Amazing.

Btw, I found a hard copy of the first part of the FACT or FICTION? referenced above.

Will see if I can transcribe part one before the day's through.

PS

That's a nice thing to share, Rn.

Interesting it says 2004. I first got involved with the online film music community around 1997-98. FILMUS-L (whatever then-current iteration) was probably my first foray but I'm surprised I wouldn't have found this place sooner in the interim. I bounced around to a lot of different forums in the early days, though, including and especially Filmtracks.

Gotcha. So then you aren't the "Mike" that attended with WDL per link above. But you attended. Neat.
