I've been setting up some "smart home" devices that past two years. Haven't gotten very far yet being it seems difficult to have a unified system. So far I have Lennox wifi thermostat, smart outlet, and a couple Nest Protect smoke/CO alarms I will be installing this week.

The Lennox thermostat is really old and the app is terrible, but works. It doesn't have anything modern like voice control or geofencing or Apple HomeKit support. I basically only use the wifi part to check on the temps when I'm on vacation. I would prefer an Ecobee thermostat for HomeKit intergration, but the Lennox thermostat is made to communicate with my system and can give technicians very specific error codes, etc.

I also have a WeMo smart outlet connected to a living room lamp. It is really convenient controlling the lamp with my voice with Alexa. A lot better than the Clapper we used to use. big grin Not HomeKit compatible without a separate $40 bridge you have to connect to your router. So I have to use the native app to control the lamp from afar.

I wanted the Nest Protect alarms so I could get notifications when away if there was a fire or CO leak (I worry having cats at home). They supposedly have a high-end photoelectric sensor not usual found in consumer alarms. Not to mention a ionization and CO sensor. Problem is it's not HomeKit compatible (being Nest is owned by Google). So another separate app to control the alarms from afar.

So with my three smart home devices I have to use three separate apps to control them. Not horrible, but a unified app like HomeKit would be nice. I also wonder about the security of these devices. The thermostat never gets updates, the WeMo occasionally, and no clue with the Nest Protects (probably don't want them messing with software on those too much being it could mean life or death if there is a bug). Ended up getting a router that has built-in security for smart devices (I believe it automatically isolates them if they get compromised).

Anyone have a more unified system?

I have a Dyson air purifier, Philips Hue lights and Google Home mini.

So far it all works together pretty well, except for the Dyson which has an update coming soon that will allow me to use it with google.

How do you like your Philips Hue? I'm probably going to give the plain white LED starter kit a try in the near future.

It is nice when they can add functionality with just a software update. Apple used to require a special chip for HomeKit compatibility, but now it can be done with software. It would be so cool to make something like a morning program for HomeKit where it turns on your coffee maker with a smart outlet, adjusts the thermostat temperature for work, and turns on the kitchen lights to about 50% with Philips Hue, all with the press of a single button.
