I have not seen the film nor any previews, so I went to Netflix and read some reviews. I was a little shocked to see some of the 'reviews' by members who did not care for the film but they felt it necessary to critisize the film using not too thinly disguised racial terms and definitions. My question: Is the film 'accessable' to a person who is a Marvel Studios Nonparticipant? Are there any characters or places or events I would need to know of, BEFORE I see this film, or can I simply press 'play' and enjoy the film on it's own merits? I really want to see it now because there was an article in Variety (today), about the best films from January through June of this year and how they may rate come Oscar time. 'Black Panther' got strong notices in the article.

The movie is self-contained and can be enjoyed by itself. It is part of the greater MCU, and there are a few references to Captain America: Civil War, which is where Black Panther debuted on film, but honestly, references to other films are Easter eggs. The film tells you everything you need to know to enjoy it. So by all means, hit play and enjoy! Black Panther is a wonderful film. You should watch the mid-credits scene, as it is a nice epilogue to the film. You can skip the post-credits scene, as it will be meaningless to you if you aren't familiar with the Captain America films.

Yes I think you can enjoy it independently. I didn't like it myself but mostly I hated the often very poor CGi which I think really detracted from the film, it also felt very long, generally I just wasn't very engàged by it.

But a lot of the actors are very good and the villain has decent motivation that actually hàd me siding with him a bit. You'll probably like it.

THANKS Michael! Yes, you answered the questions I was concerned over. I'll order the Blu-ray and give it a shot!

Black Panther - sure.

Infinity War - numerous Cliff Notes are required. And not just from Avengers movies.

Agree with Wanderer.
This is an above average MCU film. Meaning , it was the usual pile of cgi and endless fight scenes BUT, it had some originality. For that I am grateful.

Pretty shocked this was so very successful.

I temporarily ignored my self-imposed abstention of these films for this one.
Now I can go back to boycotting superhero films.

I must admit, I'm usually very confused by the overly-convoluted Marvel Universe. But I found this one to be very enjoyable and easy to follow. (Same goes for Ant Man.)

Average film at best, though the score is interesting and the ciwtumes are aming the best I've ever seen in a film. I don't think the film is as "great" as the media hype would assert, but still worth a watch or two.

However, I will shamelessly state that Lupita Nyong'o and especially Danai Gurira are goddesses!

Indeed.

All these comments about the film being "average", (and I've heard this from multiple sources) is a real surprise- considering it was a huge hit. In fact I feel rather indifferent about seeing it now.

A great film it is not. A good film it certainly is, not average. The actors are all great, particularly the women, who steal the show. The CGI is not stellar but it won't ruin the film. Just enjoy it on its own merits Dave.

Yes, this, though I would opine that Michael B. Jordan's performace in the villain role disappointed me.

Man there's some real revisionism going on here or I was snookered by the hype. All I heard when the film came out was how great the villain was in this film.

Different strokes for different folks and all that. I enjoyed Jordan's performance, as did many others. I recommend giving it a try. I know you aren't a fan of many of the Marvel movies, but if the films holds any interest for you, I say watch it.
