Oh great brains of. FSM-dom....

I was watching the (still-quite-wonderful) "Apollo 13" the other night, and there's a striking moment that would go completely by all those whom didn't know what was really going on - Tom Hanks' "Jim Lovell" meeting the real Jim lovell, albeit Lovell was playing a different character).

I got to thinking about films where an actor playing a playing a real person meets the real person on screen.

I believe Julia Roberts' "Erin Brockovich" was served by Erin Brockovich at a diner.

There must be a good many other examples....though none spring to mind at 11pm tonight after seeing my office sweepstake team dumped out of the World Cup.... Bring 'em on, oh collective brains! The more obscure the better...

Didn't something like this also happen in "The Right Stuff"? Or am I imagining that?

Edited to add - Paul Kaye played Cliff Starkey in "Blackball", which was heavily based on the story of Griff Sanders, who is seen thoroughly shitfaced in a scene with Cliff Starkey....i guess that degree of separation is just fine.

THE GOLDBERGS is a sitcom about a fictional family, named for creator Adam Goldberg's real family. At the end of one episode, Beverly (the mother character) runs into the real Beverly Goldberg, appearing in a cameo (Episode 106, "The Goldberg Girls"). The series has done this with other characters as well.

I believe some of the Holocaust survivors portrayed in the movie SCHINDLER'S LIST were accompanied by their own onscreen counterparts in the end of the film when they visit Oskar Schindler's grave.

Oh, plenty of examples, although in many cases the "real person" only has a brief cameo, and doesn't necessarily interact with the actor playing him or her. Like Frank Abagnale Jr. in CATCH ME IF YOU CAN or Jordan Belfort in THE WOLF OF WALL STREET.

Larry Flynt plays a judge in People vs. Larry Flynt, and I believe in his cameo he rules against Larry Flynt (played by Woody Harrelson) while Flynt is in the courtroom.

Yes - cameos aside, I'm really after examples where the actor meets his/her real self on screen...

Gotcha. There is no interaction between Abagnale and DiCaprio, as far as I remember, but there IS a sort of interaction between DiCaprio and Belfort in WOLF, as Belfort is seated in the auditorium that DiCaprio adresses.

In the terrible STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS, a guy playing Spock meets the real Spock. They have a whole scene together.

In JFK, real life Ex DA Jim Garrison himself cameo'd as Judge Warren (of the subject Warren Commission) whereas Kevin Costner essayed the Garrison role himself.

What about Django meeting Franco Nero in DJANGO UNCHAINED smile?

Kinda different category, isn't it? Actors meeting the actors who originally played the character?

The real Chuck Yeager plays a bartender in Pancho's Happy Bottom Riding Club. There is no direct interaction between him and Sam Shepard, who is playing Chuck Yeager in the movie, but they are in the Pancho's scenes together.

In a tangential example, was watching On The Waterfront on TCM last night and noticed that Big Mac called out, "Westerfield!" during the first shape-up. That happened to be Big Mac's name in real life. Never caught it before.

Al Jolson has a cameo in "Jolson Sings Again".

The very first film that came to my mind but for when Larry Parks playing Jolson met Larry Parks playing himself. smile

The very second one that came to my mind. CY and my mother's cousin were well acquainted back in the day.

THE FRENCH CONNECTION has a two-fer. Detectives Gene Hackman ("'Popeye' Doyle") and his on-screen partner Roy Scheider ("Buddy Russo") interact with the men upon whom their characters are based. Their captain, "Walter Simonson," is played by the real Eddie “Popeye” Egan, and a federal agent, "Klein," is played by the real Sonny Grosso.

In this one, the characters don't interact, but they are in the same scene.

In 1953's THE EDDIE CANTOR STORY, Eddie Cantor is an audience member in the last scene, watching Eddie Cantor, portrayed by Keefe Brasselle, singing.
