That's right folks, he turns 80 on July 9th. He's a very talented and Warm human being who work has been somewhat overlooked. Someone needs to fix that Happy Birthday Paul Ford A. Thaxton

I always loved Paul Chihara's work. Overlooked indeed - even his relatively high-profile PRINCE OF THE CITY (a great score, conducted by Georges Delerue if memory serves) is rarely discussed. He's one of those composers whose work I caught onto during my teens in the '70s, when his TV Movies and miniseries began turning up on the telly. He had (has) a very distinctive sound - I always loved those "unusual" (as in unconventional) harmonic leaps he used. Takes me back to the days when I'd recognise a composer's style and go "Paul Chihara!", "Robert Prince!", "Oliver Nelson!" (when not taping of course) in front of the family, and feel really smug when the correct name showed up (and really mortified when I was wrong).

If you saw Cacavas and Chihara in the 70s you knew fairly routine u.s tv thrillers would have good scores. Happy birthday paul

I would be a most happy camper if DEATH RACE 2000 saw a cd release....see Boggan's highly astute comment above. Crossing Delancy is even a good, short listen. I have 'The Tempest' concert work of his, need to give it another go. Memory of it is rather busy-Prokofiev-ian ballet writing. Prince of the City is good, but "We Don't Hear You" Varese will keep it locked up, probably.... Oddly enough it was conducted by Delerue...must have been in the neighborhood that day. The LP has great anti-movie music liner notes by Sidney Lumet that will chuckle the Williams-ites. Lionel Newman called him The Chihuahua, I always thought that was cute. Happy Birthday Maestro Chihara!
