Loved Danny Elfman's score for Gus Van Sant's new film, "Don't Worry, He Won't Get Far On Foot." Based on one viewing of the film, it was an instant buy, for me in the caliber of "Milk". It's a different sound to his previous Van Sant biopic, perhaps not as grand and choral, but it's another character-based drama with an unusual palette, this time a bit jagged and jazz-oriented.

Thor, correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe this is Elfman's seventh collaboration with Van Sant – "To Die For," "Promised Land," "Restless," "Milk," "Good Will Hunting" and "Psycho" redux. I confess, out of all of those, I only have "Milk" but they clearly have a great rapport, and this one is great fun. I thought the movie was terrific, and it was not what I was expecting; it's a kaleidoscopic character study about cartoonist John Callahan, who was an aggressive character struggling with 12-step recovery but, like the music, it never becomes mawkish or cloying. Recommended.

Picked the CD up yesterday and really enjoying it, particularly after the dull Fifty Shades scores.
One track Mother’s Name is a new version of my favourite track from Promised Land (called Alice’s Farm on that). Plenty of variety here.

No, I think you're right, dogplant. I have VERY high expectations for this, as it's my favourite sound of Elfman these days. Alas, I can't listen to the clip, but I'll receive a promo in due time.

I gave my copy a quick listen today but my ears didn't spark up until the Drawing Montage cue.
It was mainly the usual ambient/dreamy Elfman/Van Sant vibe with some wonky/bonkers jazz licks thrown in.
It didn't hit me as much as Promised Land or Milk, or Restless even.
But I'll give it some more spins this week.
I did like GVS liner notes. Quite honest and funny.

Ah, rats; searched before I posted, but did not find that thread. Oh well, twice the love.

It's a good one, Thor.

Just listened to the samples and it sounds great, ambient, jazzy. My kind of score. I'll be picking up a copy for sure.

There’s not a lot of jazz at all

Any more thoughts on this score? A friend of mine gave it to me as part of my Christmas, and I don't know if I should take the shrinkwrap off of it or not!big grinbig grinbig grin

This score is a typical example of an Elfman you should not get if you like Elfman.

It's in the vein of 'The End of the Tour', far away from his most-known style. Kev McGann has described it accurately in his post above.

Of course this is what Van Sant movies need, but I find it forgettable to listen on its own.
