Trump has been talking smack about Montenegro and suggesting that he be kicked out of the UN.
I will defend Montenegro until the end. His first "Man from UNCLE" album is better than anything on the TV show, and "Lady in Cement" is a favorite 1960s score.
I'm not a big fan of Montenegro as a recording artist. His spy covers seem too garish, and his spaghetti western covers not garish enough. But I do have a nostalgic warm spot for the 2 UNCLE albums as they were, once upon a time, back in the day, all you could get. I also out of curiosity just downloaded and listened to Hurry Sundown, and as a listening experience I was quite impressed. Montenegro seem to have the right touch for southern drama, jazzy source cues, and bluesy touches. And subtlety--something I've never associated with him. Now I want to hear more of Hugo Montenegro, the film composer.
and I always thought this track was just about the weirdest arrangement of anything ever. Listen through to the end, please.
I remember seeing this. This was a song from an animated TV movie called THE POINT with music by Harry Nilsson with the voices of Dustin Hoffman and Ringo Starr. This is obviously a cover version. I do not resent Montenegro as some do (except in some obituaries that said he "wrote" THE MAN FROM UNCLE and THE GOOD THE BAD AND THE UGLY). I think ALL his cover versions of things were inferior to the originals. But I did admire not just HURRY SUNDOWN but THE UNDEFEATED and even VIVA MAX!

I took a chance and bought this album based on the samples. For me this is a superb score very much in the vein of Elmer Bernstein. Indeed if I’d heard this without knowing the composer I would probably have guessed Elmer. I would urge anyone with a liking for 1960s Bernstein or Goldsmith Americana to give this one a go. It’s well worth the sale price at Intrada and it’s such a shame that a CD like this hasn’t sold well for Intrada (assuming that’s the reason for the reduction).
Are there any other Montenegro scores in a similar vein?
That cover version of the song from The Point is scarier than anything I saw in the recent film IT. It was bonkers but great
I'm not sure how bonkers it was. The animated movie THE POINT was kind of psychedelic (influenced highly by stuff like YELLOW SUBMARINE). The carnival feel is in the original Nilsson recording.
Aye, but certainly not to that extent (I love the old Nilsson LP & CD). That version would sound more at home with the Schifrin fairground cues in Rollercoaster.
I really dig The Undefeated, and was blown away by the incredible power of Hurry Sundown. Haven't investigated his arrangements of other composers' music.
