Admittedly, I've only skimmed a little bit of scoring before, but I liked what I heard and the composer roster for the series gives me confidence in checking it out, plus there aren't as many original scores for this series, so here I go.

As before with recent series threads, I am breaking down each post as covering one season, so my first comment below will cover just one episode.

Season One has no credited composers.

Season 2:

"Incident of the Dancing Death"

  • 15:12 in.
  • 29:16 in.

I had to skip this one: NO LOAD FOUND.

    "A Woman's Place"

I have this marked down as an uncredited score by Tiomkin. I can't recall where I go this information from. I will assume it could be wrong.

Maybe season 1 used stock music, but surely seasons 2 & 3 had more than a single original score, each?

Whatever the case, sign me up for a 2-3 disc set with the best of the series music (including the complete Goldsmith score, of course)!

I would buy any RAWHIDE music in a snap of the finger. Great TV series and some fine scores. WAGON TRAIN CDs would be another instant buy.

    Keep posting the info Justin.

    SEASON 6:

    "Incident of the Red Wind"
    By: Leon Klatzkin
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_W_6kpw3_IA

I know I skipped Klatzkin in my "Gunsmoke" thread (I just found his scores serviceable but boring), but he didn't do that many here, so I'm going to suck it up and go for it...

    Highlight:
  • 10:31 in.

  • 34:48 in.

    Finishing SEASON 6:

    "Incident of the Odyssey"
    By: Nathan Scott

  • 47:57 in.

    "Incident at Seven Fingers"
    By: Leon Klatzkin
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-PBybpRWNZM

This is Klatzkin's final effort for the series.
Perhaps the reason he didn't score the second part of the episode above was there was some kind of falling out with the producers. There was a composer shift in the next season which perhaps backs that assumption up.

    Highlights:
  • 10:43 in.
  • 13:55 in.
  • 16:18 in.
  • 27:20 in.
  • 31:27 in. And after the commercial break.

    "Canliss"

  • 14:19 in.
  • 36:19 in.
  • 46:17 in.
  • 49:59 in.

    * = Uses "I've Been Working on the Railroad" to some degree. I didn't not keep track of every cue that did this.

    "Damon's Road: Part II"
    By: Rudy Schrager

  • 28:17 in.
  • 29:21 in.
  • 38:48 in.
  • 4233 in.
  • 46:55 in.

    * = I like how Schrager isn't afraid to use a series' theme in some of his cues. I recall he did this on "Gunsmoke", too, while most of the composers shied away from that.

Overall this may be the best score yet.

    "No Dogs or Drovers"

  • 31:56 in.
  • 36:33 in.
  • 42:32 in.
  • 45:03 in.
  • 47:55 in.

    Another overall good score.

Outlaw: "Now, if I was a good-hearted outlaw that you read about in the newspapers, why, I'd probably leave the gold with your for Denver's wife and child, but I'm not; I'm heartless," smiles and leaves.

    That's it for today.
Tomorrow: More Schrager. And Gerald Fried.

  • 16:00 in.
  • 1736 in.
  • 50:19 in.

  • 34:39 in.
  • 36:35 in.
  • 43:25 in.
  • 45:18/48:10 in.

A fine effort. I'm tempted to call it a top tier effort for the series.

    "The Winter Soldier"
    By: Gerald Fried
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fXXi_d_G_aQ

Fried's final effort for the series.

    Highlights:
  • 1:04 in.
  • 2:27 in.
  • 5:28 in.
  • 7:10 in.
  • 11:08 in.
  • 12:10 in.
  • 16:00 in.
  • 18:09 in.
  • 24:11 in.

  • 38:53 in.
  • 4124 in.
  • 44:38 in.
  • 47:05 in.
  • 47:57 in.

Another fine score by Fried. Again, I'm tempted to call it a top tier effort for the series.

That's a good deal of the score I mentioned, and time wise, it's the majority of the score.

    "Prairie Fire"
    By: Rudy Schrager
Conducted by: Herschel Burke Gilbert (I don't mention conducting unless it's done by somebody else)
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N8MwsOqPFrQ

    Highlights:
  • 1:04 in. A great opening cue.
  • 3:34 in.
  • 5:22 in.
  • 8:01 in.
  • 11:27 in.
  • 17:10 in.
  • 20:59/21:12 in.
  • 23:57 in.
  • 30:50/33:00 in.
  • 35:26 in.
  • 38:44 in.
  • 40:51 in.
  • 42:17 in.
  • 43:54 in.
  • 49:00 in.

Antoher score I'm tempted to call a top tier effort.

    "The Retreat"

  • 50:08 in.

  • 8:27 in.
  • 25:14 in.

    "The Calf Women"
    By: Lyn Murray
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=clOfHbD3jw8

    Highlights:
  • 1:03/3:03 in.
  • About 11:00 in.
  • 14:21 in.
  • 1645 in.
  • 24:06 in. I've heard this theme before. Perhaps he re-used it from a "Gunsmoke" episode he scored.
  • 25:30 in.
  • 28:48 in.
  • 42:06 in.
  • 46:17 in. I'm joining a cue already in progress.
  • 48:17 in.

I think I'm going to label this a second tier effort.

Wishbone: "I got the strongest feeling I'm gonna be able to blame this on you."

    "The Spanish Camp"
    By: Fred Steiner
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b_DXgfsahus

    SEASON 8:

This is the final season of the show. It's short.

    "Encounter at Boot Hill"
    By: Bernard Herrmann
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Od9TMu5haB0

    Highlights:
  • 1:04 in.
  • 1:59 in.
  • 3:18 in.
  • 4:05 in.
  • 5:32 in.
  • 8:03 in.
  • 10:15 in.
  • 12:45 in.
  • 15:51 in.
  • 28:53 in. And after the commercial break.
  • 33:59 in.
  • 3622 in. And after the commercial break.
  • 37:36 in. Semi dramatic rocking chair music.
  • 46:16 in.
  • 49:34/50:22 in.
  • And the end credits -- a new instrumental arrangement for this season, obviously taking a page from the "Gunsmoke" end credits at the time in more than one way.

    That's pretty much every cue.

The following CD may contain score from this episode:

    "Six Weeks to Bent Fork"
    By: Hugo Friedhofer
    Conducted by: Morton Stevens
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-_CrvHz3w5w

    Highlights:
  • 0:00 in.
  • 2:30 in.
  • 3:44 in.
  • 5:18 in.
  • 8:17 in.
  • 9:54 in.
  • 15:34/16:50 in.
  • 18:13 in.
  • 21:08 in.
  • 24:03 in.
  • 27:06 in.
  • 29:12 in.
  • 32:27 in. And after the commercial break.
  • 39:23 in.
  • 40:33 in.

A fine score. Something holding me back from calling it a top tier effort, but you may disagree with me.

Six cues from the score were released on the obscure Film Music Society CBS Westerns CD with scores from "Gunsmoke" and one episode score from "Cimarron Strip":
    http://www.soundtrackcollector.com/catalog/soundtrackdetail.php?movieid=69873

I suspect had the series continued we might have gotten a Stevens' scored episode.

Rowdy is in charge now, with no explanation to what happened to the old boss.

    "Walk into Terror"
    By: Harry Geller
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JfTUyGa1Rfk

This is Geller's only effort for the series.

    Highlights:
  • 0:00 in.
  • 5:32 in.
  • 10:30 in.
  • 24:00 in.
  • 26:17 in.
  • 27:48 in.
  • 31:14 in.
  • 34:40 in.
  • 36:00 in.
  • 39:48 in.

Oh what an awful bear costume.

    "Escape to Doom"
    By: Richard Shores
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MqlX7fWpUa0

    Highlights:
  • 0:00 in.
  • 2:20 in.
  • 7:06 in.
  • 19:34 in.
  • 21:06 in.
  • 25:24 in.
  • 30:15 in.
  • 32:54 in.
  • 36:16 in.

    "The Vasquez Woman"
    By: Richard Shores
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eMiWRdMtr20

This is Shores' final effort for the series.
In passed episodes he has been credited as "Composed and Conducted by", but not this time. Whomever conducted it, is not credited.

    Highlights:
  • 0:00 in.
  • 1:21 in.
  • 5:18 in.
  • 11:38 in. A Spanish guitar piece.
  • 14:49/17:00 in.
  • 18:42 in.
  • 23:06 in.
  • 25:09 in.
  • 28:38 in.
  • 40:30 in.
  • 43:04 in.

    That's it for today.
Monday: Green, May, Herrmann and Murray.

    Finishing SEASON 8:

    "Hostage for Hanging"
    By: John Green
https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x611zzi (this load is sped up some)
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fjtdV40xhno

This is Green's only effort for the series.

    Highlights:
  • 1:48 in.
  • 2:31 in.
  • 5:46 in.
  • 7:39 in.
  • 8:50 in. There's a brief lull.
  • 14:03 in.
  • 24:47 in.
  • 27:09 in.
  • 31:09 in.
  • 34:39 in.
  • 37:19 in.

Borderline top tier effort. It's a little too inconsistent, and the sax' use for romantic implications is too modern era for an old west show.

    "Clash at Broken Bluff"
    By: Billy May
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vu5VyUx3wVI

This is May's only effort for the series.
    (no conductor credited)

    Highlights:
  • 7:00/7:21/21:00 in.
  • 14:11 in.
  • 25:29 in.
  • 27:30 in.

Overall, probably one of the worst-fitting scores of the series. I would have tossed a score like this, if I were a producer on the show. But I'd not have hired May to begin with.

    "The Pursuit"
    By: Bernard Herrmann
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a0Q5-OEJvWk
https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x611zzv (more muffled bad mono-sounding crap)

This is Herrmann's final effort for the series.

    Highlights:
  • 0:00 in.
  • 7:20 in.
  • 12:48 in.
  • 14:38 in.
  • 19:21 in.
  • 20:24 in.
  • 24:54 in.
  • 29:27 in.
  • 30:57 in.
  • 42:27 in.

    "Crossing at White Feather"
    By: Lyn Murray
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YYaWnVsDx6Y

    Last episode of the series.

    Highlights:
  • 0:00 in.
  • 1:49 in.
  • 7:30 in.
  • 8:47 in.
  • 11:06 in.
  • 12:18 in.
  • 19:50 in.
  • 24:25 in.
  • 29:32 in.
  • 33:14 in.
  • 38:01 in.
  • 38:46 in. And after the commercial break (which has some triumphant fanfare material).
  • 43:49 in.

And finally, to close it off, I do what I did in the "Gunsmoke" thread:

Uncredited, Additional, Stock Music, and/or Tracked Music Composers:

    Lenny Adelson
    Daniele Amfitheatrof
    George Antheil
    Marcel Assola
    William Barnett
Thomas Bayly (co-credited wiht Steiner on one cue)
    Malcolm Bellby
Herschel Gilbert Burke (apparently he did more than conducting; also one listing has him co-credited with Schrager)
John Campbell (also credited with Lucien Moraweck)
    Jack Cathcart
    Eugene Cines
    Nathan Van Cleave
    Marius Constant
    Eric Cook
    Robert Drasnin
    Daniel Elliot
Dominic Frontiere (IMDb shows stock music)
    Umberto Galassi
Russell Garcia (on another cue he's co-credited with Goldsmith)
    Rene Garriguenc
Paul Girlando (I suspect he created an original music library for earlier seasons, like he did "Gunsmoke")
    Ernest Gold
    Bernard Green
    Wilbur Hatch
    Howard Jackson
    Sol Kaplan
    Bernhard Kaun
    Martin L. Klein
    Willaim Lava
    John Leipold
    Gino Marinuzzi
    Richard Markowitz
    James Moody
Lucien Moraweck (he's also co-credited with Steiner on one listing)
    Jerome Moross *
    Alfred Newman
    Lionel Newman
    Alex North
    tommy Reilly
    Leonard Rosenman
    Laurence Rosenthal
    Marlin Skiles
    Herman Stein
    Morton Stevens
    William Grant Still
    Don Ray
    Tommy Reilly
    Hugo Riesenfeld
Pete Rugolo (IMDb shows stock music)
    Carlo Savina
    Arthur Wilkinson

James A. bland and Joel Davis (credited together)

Some of these are taken from BMI and ASCAP listings, which don't differentiate between the series and the film, so I may have composers listed who only contributed to the un-related earlier film.

There are a number of "writer unknown" cues on ASCAP. Perhaps people didn't want to take credit for their work. Or the data is lost to time.

    * = IMDb shows him credited for additional music on the episodes "The Greedy Town", "The Deserters' Patrol", and "the Woman Trap". I suspect it's bad wording on the part of the contributor and it's tracked from prior works.

Great thread, Justin -- thanks for your investigation into this series. I really hope LLL or Intrada takes up the challenge of condensing a 4 disc set of the very best scores. I know I'd buy it.

    You're welcome.

So, what did you think of the Fried efforts?

And yes, per your earlier question, the earlier seasons had almost no original scores. Season one has no credited composer. Some Herrmann work is tracked, supposedly Russell Garcia did some scoring (though not credited).

Leith Stevens was the only credited composer on season two.

And Goldsmith and Steiner were the only two composers credited on season three. Aside from "Incident at the Top of the World", which I need to find a load of to check.

The other day I caught the last 10 or so minutes of Rawhide S01E08 - Incident West of Lano. I was quite taken by the music by Russell Garcia and the cinematography. Quality stuff! You can watch it on Dailymotion.
