I'm also interested in the collaboration between Williams and David Foster on 1988's FRESH HORSES, and the 1996 GRASS HARP score on the Windham Hill label.
Underrated and way underused. But every now and then he was given an opportunity. Thanks for all of it!
I was just reminded of that score today, and remembered how fond I am of it. (Goldsmith was originally announced to score that one. Sad there was never a Goldsmith/Richard Lester collaboration)
He wrote a Pulitzer-nominated album called American Concerto for jazz quartet and symphony orchestra. Very nice work with solos from Phil Woods; unfortunately, never on CD.
Sad news indeed. There are two of his film scores I play every few months, one more than the other. 'CUBA', was a marvelously dark film with a great score by Mr. Williams. But it is his adaptive treatments to classical pieces as well as a few new ones of his own for the film 'BREAKING AWAY', that's my favorite. I recall, (quite some time before the actual soundtrack was released), about having a thread here on this board about HOW I could get all the classical pieces that were used in the film, and assemble, somehow, a tape of my own. There were many responses to my question, but I cannot seem to find that thread anymore. Then the c.d. came out by (Intrada?), and that score is played all the time by me. Thanks Mr. Williams!

I was going to post about a pair of kick-in-the-gut cues but an earlier thread has it. Film, music, film & music just plain aces. Such heart. Hate to lose ones with that.
Very sad to hear this news. Condolences to his family, friends and colleagues.
First score I probably heard from him was back in the 70's, THE ONE AND ONLY starring Henry Winkler. Got the LP and loved the fun and touching music score. I also really enjoyed his music from JESUS The Epic Mini-Series and his beautiful music from THE GRASS HARP. He gave us a lot of really great music and will be missed. Rest in Peace Maestro Williams.
What a lovely piece of music this is from THE GRASS HARP. Listening with great respect. Bravo Maestro and Thank you!
I got to hear Williams' voice one the phone once, asking for someone at my job.
But what I remember him for is the arranging jobs he did for people like Monica Mancini, on her album of her father's film songs.
Williams did the impossible: he re-imagined those songs in ways that stood up beautifully alongside the classic arrangements that Mancini had done himself.
I first came across Patrick Williams in his album "Think Pat Williams". Though not a soundtrack album it did have an expanded version of a jingle in which he first made his name - the jingle "Whatcha Got To Lose" which was for Diet Rite Cola. His symphonic work "Gulliver" with text by Larry Gelbart that was spoken by Sir John Gielgud and Williams conducting the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra was great too. Let's hope La La Land puts out his score for "SSSSS" someday. R.I.P. Patrick Williams.
How sad to hear. I have his score to the film The Grass Harp. It is lovely. I just looked and I also have Sinatraland, another stellar album by Mr. Williams.
What a talented man and what a loss. My condolences to his family.
