Limited Edition of 1988 Units
RETAIL PRICE: $29.98

La-La Land Records and CBS proudly present the original television score to the 1988 return of the famed MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE television series. Acclaimed composers Lalo Schifrin (MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE, DIRTY HARRY, RUSH HOUR) and Ron Jones (STAR TREK TNG, FAMILY GUY) pull out all the musical stops for this 80’s era incarnation of the original show, using orchestra and electronics to propel the series’ trademark mystery, drama and action. Clever and effective uses of Schifrin’s immortal “title theme” and “The Plot” pieces abound, giving these episode scores that special, iconic MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE charge. Produced by Lukas Kendall and mastered by Doug Schwartz, this special 2-CD release showcase the series’ musical highlights over its two season run. Film music historian and journalist, Jon Burlingame consulted on this project and wrote the in-depth, exclusive liner notes. The sharp art direction is by Dan Goldwasser. This is a limited edition of 1988 units.

Hot damn. So much original Lalo Schifrin and Ron Jones goodness in this set, plus some surprising bonus cues from other composers. This reminds me a bit of LLL's neat 2CD set for Planet of the Apes: The Series. I definitely think I will have to pick this up to complement my 6CD set from the original show.

BTW, anyone who doesn't have that but likes Mission: Impossible music should not delay, at that $20 discount and less than 100 copies left...

Went into this hoping for more explosive Ron Jones orchestral action (ala his TNG work) but the samples indicate that's definitely not the case, tapping more into his use of electronics. The drum set also makes me giggle every time it's used. Not really my thing but I hope others enjoy.

Lalo Schifrin + Ron Jones + Mission: Impossible music = must have for Josh. But you already knew that, obviously, because you clearly made this CD specifically for me.

MV,

For those episodes in the tracklisting where Jones is only listed as conductor and the cues are all credited to other people, is that because the episodes were only credited Jones and none of it was him, or were cues from Jones not selected for those episodes on the set?

I do hope they do a Volume 2 with the John E. Davis material so I can chuck my GNP cd once and for all.

Ron did three episodes which he scored conventionally (writing out all the cues and recording them), and three more where, to satisfy the Mission producer who was increasingly hands-on, they did them as "jam sessions" with Ron supervising and conducting. For the latter three, the cue sheets give credit to several of Ron's colleagues, though he received the on-screen composer credit.

Thank you for the clarification.

So, Ron did not do any jamming of his own on these three?

So... anyone got this and had a chance to listen to it, yet? I just got mine today and let me first say that I'm a huge fan of the classic Mission Impossible boxset LLL put out a few years ago - it's just a phenomenal release! This new album is, well, underwhelming. There's not a lot of new and interesting thematic material and what's left is a LOT of variations of "The Plot". Schifrin's scores aren't on par with those he wrote for the classic series nor is Jones' work up there with his contemporaneous TNG scores. And the scores are in some cases pretty dated by the use of the drum kits and synth effects of the time.

Anyways. Sorry to come off negatively on this release. Anyone else had a chance to listen?

Chris
