Got me thinking about the days in the 1990s when they gave two awards for best dramatic and comedy score.

Can we bring back multiple categories:

- Best Orchestral Score
- Best Traditional Score
- Best Guitar Noodling Score
- Best Zimmer Score (composed by Hans Zimmer)
- Best Zimmer Score (not composed by Hans Zimmer)

etc etc

You know what this reminds me of? All this bullshit in the schools when students compete.... they ALL win a prize! Gimme a fuggin' break!

They should do that with sporting events! World Cup, Champions League, and even the lowly Super Bowl.

As a student who dealt with the "everyone gets a prize" system, we didn't enjoy that crap. I remember the first science fair in third grade. One of the teachers let it slip that everyone got either a First Place, Second Place, or Third Place award, like a goddamn grading system. I can distinctly remember a wave of miniature anger and resentment passing through the gymnasium, as we all lamented to our respective circles of friends that we might as well not compete since the prizes meant nothing. Frankie Burke, Matthew Stout, and I were instantly over it. The adults thought it was a good idea and we couldn't have been more irritated with how they babied us.

On the other hand, that list of categories above is hilarious, especially the two Hans Zimmer categories.

Except it has absolutely nothing to do with that. Oscar ratings are way, way down, and the show has become irrelevant in general, because the gulf between movies that win awards and movies that anybody sees has grown impossibly wide. Long gone are the days when movies like "Rocky," "Titanic," and "Forest Gump" were popular hits that were recognized by the Academy. Now, people see "Avengers" while "Moonlight" wins Oscars. And America yawns and watches something else.

That is to say, the Academy isn't doing this to protect the feelings of the people who make popular movies. They're doing it to protect themselves.

That said, it's a pathetic attempt to reassert relevance, and will further lessen what little prestige was left for all winners.

Remember, when they split the score categories up, it was primarily a way to combat Disney winning every single year, only once that split happened, Disney won the first year for 1995's Pocahontas (#buildthatwall) and then didn't win again until 2009!

And Disney will probably win the 'most popular film' Oscar every year, since they own Marvel, Pixar, Star Wars, 20th Century Fox, you, me and Uncle Tom Cobley and all.

No Jim, a new generation breaking through the good ole days are slim, I feel that way with tv shows, big movies the Oscars today.

There already is an award for most popular movies. It is called money.

What?! Artistes don't care a wit about dirty, filthy lucre.
