I saw this 1954 film last night for the first time, and was very pleased to see how good it is. Besides the thrilling footage during the main title of the Southern Pacific train traveling through the desert, I also love the Andre Previn score. I have been a fan of his DEAD RINGER and THE FOUR HORSEMEN OF THE APOCALYPSE for many years, but BLACK ROCK is a new one on me. The score is recorded extremely well and is reproduced with lots of dramatic impact on the DVD. Is there a CD recording available of this fine score?
Great flick. Dynamite cast. Love it when Spence gives it to Ernesto in the diner. .... and when Spence takes care of Robert Ryan the ringleader with a Molotov cocktail.
One of the few scores Previn brings up as a pleasant memory of Hollywood. John Sturge's film is forever branded into my psyche with it's ultra-rare exposure of Japanese racism postwar.
I saw this film when it came out and loved it. Was only about 10 years old. How many hyped -up kids today would sit through it? Watched it again on DVD a few years ago, great film and performances.
