I've just bought 'The Outsiders' (the complete novel) with the rock n roll soundtrack....hated it ! I remember seeing the 'original' version on TV with Carmine Coppola's beautiful score and loved it ! I know it's subjective, but which version do you folks prefer ? Right with you, Leo. I am absolutely not an anti-directors' cuts guy, not even anti-Coppola's, and I also find his misfires to be surprisingly emotional watches, even while I am hyper-conscious of the films' flaws. They are not good movies, but I would still watch One From the Heart and Youth Without Youth again with someone. Plus, I did not love the theatrical cut of Outsiders, as you did, but found it one of those... not flawed masterpieces, but maybe masterful flaws. It was an okay story, a little clunky as a film, and yet I cared about everyone, and got a full, warm vibe from it. So in theory, this had nowhere to go but up. *Man*, what a tough thing this was to sit through! Vibe: gone. Caring about characters: kind of difficult. Also, I always found the sniping about Crying Hobbits in Return of the King to be lazy joking. There is more than one such moment, but at the conclusion of an 11 hour adventure like that, it was all earned. In this one, it really isn't. And I think this 2 hour film beats the whole LOTR hexology for number of such scenes, like each actor had to do it to fulfill a checklist. Even being Mr. anti-"men shouldn't cry!" I got a little annoyed with it. So I affirm your experience, pal, 100%, and it was wildly unexpected, I must say.
