It's unfathomable that an artistic genius like Hans Richter went from the dizzying heights of "Ghosts Before Breakfast" to scoring tripe like "White Boy[sic] Rick." Oh well, at least old Hans is still in the business.
I first got into Max Richter's music (like a lot of people, I guess) upon hearing his On The Nature Of Daylight in the film (and then on the CD) SHUTTER ISLAND. It would subsequently turn up a lot more in other shows, most notably ARRIVAL. Then it was that reworked Vivaldi piece (oft used in ads) and his score to a BLACK MIRROR episode and I was on my way, down the Richter path. I've acquired quite a bit more Richter these past few years, but always avoided this one, due to some off-putting reviews I'd read about it on soft net. Anyway, it was 2 quid in a shop in town t'other week, so I decided to give it a whirl (I mean, c'mon...2 quid...would you even bend down to pick that up?) It's actually pretty decent. Not at all the horror show I'd been led (read?) to believe. It is predominantly synth/ambient, sounding not unlike a modern John Carpenter/JNH score at times, with the constantly throbbing synth line (I've often thought Richter is like a classically trained JC on many previous occasions). But there are some lovely, typical, but highly effective Richter piano melodies to be found within the score and it never descends into noise or distortion (well...very rarely). This will appeal mainly to his most ardent fans or those who have a taste for modern electronic/ambient scoring, but it's very effective nonetheless.
