If you were kidding well, okay, humor is great but sometimes it is disrespectful

"Sometimes", as when it's posted on the FSM Board.

I do wish the elderly fans of this dying artform would lighten up...sometimes.

Other people kid here all the time, but when I do it everyone thinks I'm serious even when I have the wink icon. I know it's out of character for Williams, that's the whole thing.

Perhaps better not to start a whole thread for a throwaway "joke" or comment...? What did you think would happen?

Yeah, I guess you're right.

Henry, don't let these edgy, mailbox-circling, cracked-jewel-case neurotics and their predictably bitter overreactions get you down!

I like to think that Henry’s got a point. When John Williams jots down the final note, I think he fist-pumps, sits back in his chair with his arms stretched upwards and shouts “Yesssss!” repeatedly. Then he’s like “In your face, Jerry!” and finally he checks his bank balance on his Huawei phone and chuckles as he changes the lumberjack shirt he always writes in for his trademark black turtleneck and joins his family for dinner.

It is indeed, Leeward. Welcome to the board by the way.

Well, even as humble as he appears to be, I can see that happening.

Williams knows he's great at what he does. For 30+ years he was the most in-demand composer in the business, racked up 50 Oscar nominations and 5 wins and (as far as I know) has never had a score rejected.

Damn, he's good! smile

You know what? maybe sometimes he does. Sometimes an artist can be very proud of a piece of work. Everyone who does stuff knows what they're good at. Do you think a man who has been composing film and TV scores for over 60 years, has had his work recorded, rerecorded, played in concerts, used all over television and films and who is hailed as one of the greatest living composers doesn't have any idea of his skill level? Not every artist creates out of pain. Not every artist abandons a work because of a deadline. Sometimes, it really is completed. Writers will rewrite a chapter until it's where they want it to be. Why not a composer?

Jerry Goldsmith had work he was proud of. Leonard Rosenmann was exceptionally proud of himself. Why would John Williams, who outclassed Rosenmann's best work by a light year, be any less proud of himself?

John Williams is a classy gent. He is exactly the kind of guy we want our composers to be. But I would be more surprised if he looked back at his body of work and said "meh. It's okay, I guess."

F'k, I know it was a joke question, but somewhere along the line, maybe upon hearing E.T. performed for the first time, he sat back as said "holy crap, this is good." He's human, he's an artist and a craftsman and he has every right to be proud of his own work and aware of his own talent. I would never begrudge him that.

Compose proudly, Mister Williams!

What a stupid question.

Were you born a mean-spirited, humorless human being? Or did you have to work at it your whole life?

Jesus, guys... it was a joke.

Crikey, there are some people here taking this far too seriously! big grin

I adore John Williams, and treat him with reverence that I'm sure would make him blush. But I'm not so stuffy that I can't chuckle at the idea of him scribbling away with his pencil, sitting back and thinking "hell yeah!"

Henry, it wasn't a stupid question. It was a funny thought, and thanks for planting it in my head tonight smile It quite obviously comes from a place of love for the man and his talents.

Nope..no way. I guess you never seen ANY interview Williams has been apart of.

Exactly. All these waggy-fingered, twisty-knickered wankers ought to be ashamed of themselves (says the man in the twisted knickers wagging his finger).

Posting selfies of them at bullshit “award ceremonies” that consist of like, 7 people all patting each other on the back. Handing out meaningless awards to each other.

You kind of sound like you could be describing the oscars and emmys honestly...

Well said! Anyone who crafts something useful -- from a fine sentence to a tasty omlet -- deserves to savor the moment. But the wise man knows to move on without boasting.

Tempt me no more; for I
Have known the lightning's hour,
The poet's inward pride,
The certainty of power.
