We are limiting ourselves to one film per composer.

My top 10 film scores of all time are:

A.I. Artificial Intelligence - John Williams
American Beauty - Thomas Newman
Chinatown - Jerry Goldsmith
Vertigo - Bernard Herrmann
The Lord of the Rings - Howard Shore
A Streetcar Named Desire - Alex North
Blade Runner - Vangelis
For All Mankind - Brian Eno
Blue - Simon Fisher Turner
Jose Torres - Toru Takemitsu

Had we not limited ourselves to one film per composer, I would be tempted to mention Close Encounters of the Third Kind and/or one more Herrmann, North, Takemitsu or Newman score.

What would your top 10/30 film scores of all time look like?

We've done this a few times before, yes.

I even did a podcast episode about mine here: http://celluloidtunes.no/celluloid-tunes-01-topp-10-soundtracks/

But it's in Norwegian. Here's a list I made at MUBI of my Top 50 a few years ago (at that time; might be some slight changes since then):

But it must have been a while ago, anyway, let's do it again. List your top 10 film scores (and 20 honorable mentions for a top 30) if you want - limited to one film per composer.

Well, since some personal preferences is implied, my top ten list looks at the moment like this (in no particular order, with composer last name included to show I didn't repeat any composer):

1. "Rudy" (Goldsmith)
2. "Jaws" (Williams)
3. "Conan the Barbarian" (Poledouris)
4. "The Great Escape" (Bernstein)
5. "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan" (Horner)
6. "The Thorn Birds" (Mancini)
7. "North By Northwest" (Herrmann)
8. "Troy" (rejected score, Yared)
9. "The Mission" (Morricone)
10. "Dances With Wolves" (Barry)

Can honorary mentions include composers already mentioned?

Can honorary mentions include composers already mentioned?

No, you are only allowed to name one film per composer, but you don't have to name 20 honorable mentions if you don't want to - a top 10 is enough.

Lewya said: No, you are only allowed to name one film per composer, but you don't have to name 20 honorable mentions if you don't want to - a top 10 is enough

Sorry, but I think that rule kind of wrecks our choices. How does one pick between The Magnificent Seven and To Kill A Mockingbird? Those are totally different movie genres and scores and yet both are equally magnificent. Sometime great composers compose more than "one" great score, so limiting us to using a composer only once is NOT representative to our authentic personal choices.

I’ll follow the “required” rules for the first 10.

    Bernstein: The Magnificent Seven
    Rosza: Ben Hur
    Horner: Legends Of The Fall
    Williams: Superman
    Conti: Rocky
    Goldsmith: Star Trek
    Barry: Dances With Wolves
    Poledouris: Lonesome Dove
    Moross The Big Country
Morricone: The Good, The Bad, The Ugly

Now breaking the rules I’ll add the following that I feel are equal to the above 10 and use the same composer more than once.

    Bernstein: To Kill A Mockingbird
Goldsmith: Lonely Are The Brave and Rio Conchos
    Barry: Robin and Marian
    Doyle: Henry V
Morricone: The Untouchables and The Mission
    Poledouris: Conan The Barbarian
Shore: Lord of the Rings Trilogy
    Rosza: King of Kings
    Williams: Jane Eyre
Newman: How The West Was Won and Wuthering Heights

Jesus, it's just a game. Play by the rules, don't play by the rules, nobody should care. Personally, I thought it was fun to pick 30 favorite scores by 30 different composers, and, again, nobody really cares.
