The past two weekends, I watched the 8 episodes of "Dan August" (1970) and the 14 episodes of "Hawk" (1966) that were broadcast on getTV in tribute to Burt Reynolds. I had seen "Dan August" before, albeit when it was last broadcast on CBS about 40 years ago. But this was my first viewing of "Hawk." I have to say that "Hawk" is the better show. Perhaps it's the NYC locale of "Hawk" versus the sunny Southern California of "Dan August." Add to that the fact that "Hawk" is filmed almost exclusively at night (Detective Lt. John Hawk works the overnight shift for the D.A.'s office), and that nearly every episode of "Hawk" has a great jazz score by Kenyon Hopkins.

"Hawk" is a gritty show, with more malevolent villains, and since John Hawk basically works the streets alone (with only occasional support from folks back at the office) there is more of Burt Reynolds in "Hawk" than there is in "Dan August," where he has to share screen time with co-stars Norman Fell, Richard Anderson, and Ned Romero. I wish the 17 episodes of "Hawk" were available on DVD.

"I'm glad you like TARGETS, Mr. Marshall, but I'm sorry you can't find anything else to enjoy in the PB filmography. I always thought PAPER MOON was first rate, and a few years ago at a revival screening it still worked like gangbusters with the packed picture palace crowd."

On December 7, VEI will be releasing the complete series run (one season) of Burt Reynolds' 1970-71 television series "Dan August". The 27 episodes mentioned on the cover include the series pilot, a Quinn Martin made-for-TV movie called "The House on Greenapple Road," which did not star Reynolds. The film was based on Harold R. Daniels's 1966 mystery novel of the same name and starred Christopher George as "Dan August," with Keenan Wynn as "Sergeant Wilentz" and Barry Sullivan as "Chief Untermeyer." Christopher George passed on doing the "Dan August" series in 1970, choosing "The Immortal" instead. So, the film roles were played by Reynolds, Norman Fell, and Richard Anderson in the series. Ned Romero and Ena Hartman were the only actors in the film who reprised their roles in the series. The film also featured Janet Leigh, Julie Harris, Walter Pidgeon, Ed Asner, Eve Plumb, Lynda Day, Joanne Linville, Tim O'Connor, Mark Richman, and William Windom. It aired on ABC on 11 January 1970.

Reynolds later recalled "I swore I'd never play a cop on TV because you can't make jokes or have a broad. You wind up loving your car a lot. I was halfway out the door when Quinn said the magic words - $15,000 a week."
