Herrmann went through a period of using lower and higher pitched cymbals (actually smaller and larger sized cymbals) in several of his scores. They usually follow each other in rapid succession. The first use I have detected was in BENEATH THE 12-MILE REEF (the boat burning scene). But the real period where he used this technique a lot started with THE NAKED AND THE DEAD main title. The next use is in various cues in MYSTERIOUS ISLAND, especially the Main Title, although it also shows up in the other cues (such as "The Balloon," plus the scene at the end when the volcano erupts, and the End Title). Then, there there is the obvious use of different-pitched cymbals in the Main Title and other cues in JASON AND THE ARGONAUTS.
JASON (you also get a gong besides the different sized cymbals:
With all respect, Jim Cleveland said "normal-sized cymbals," meaning something like 14" or 16" (or larger) cymbals, not finger cymbals like Debussy used at the end of Prélude à l'après-midi d'un faune.
Hi guys.... Sorry.... I've been very sick for the past two weeks, and haven't felt like "elaborating" on what I was talking about. Hopefully tonight I will give you the precise example to which I was referring.
