On my first listen-through now. It's a very nice score; the main theme (performed on alt oboe?) and the minimalist structure sends immediate associations to Geoffrey Burgon's music for BRIDESHEAD REVISITED (although not quite as pastoral as that score).

The use of choir A New Generation is stunning!

Just played the 6 excerpts available on YouTube and like them very much. Indeed a very dynamic approach, with a touch of minimalistic arpeggios, solo oboe and a superb use of the choir. I think I'll go for it.

As a whole, I must say I'm not that familiar with this composer, who also writes a lot of concert works. I only have a double CD entitled OUT OF THE DARK ROOM which gathers excerpts from 6 of his scores including WALTZ WITH BASHIR and WADJDA. I also borrowed HOSTILES a few days ago but stopped it after 4 or 5 tracks because it was truly boring, with hardly anything happening! I'll try to give a try to the reminder of the CD though.

Minimalist composers are, by their nature, often boring.
But, when they hit the mark they can be great.
Hans fits into that mold.

But Max Richter is not minimalist. It's true that he uses those tools on occasion, but mostly, he's about combining contemporary classical trends with a romantic sensibility. MARY QUEEN OF SCOTS is a good example.

If you count Glass, Nyman, Budd et. Al as minimalist, he is too.
But, it's just a label to more easily categorize his style.
Not always descriptive.
I like his style.

I agree with this. Richter's Mary, Queen of Scots is definitely outside of the minimalism sound of Nyman, Glass and the latter day Zimmer.

I think the score is pretty damn good. Anxious to hear within the film next week.

  • I can't say I'm knowledgeable about this composer but everything I have heard of his so far is sleep-inducing and funereal.

It's funny you should say that...
