Zimmer can be brilliant in Sci-Fi (Interstellar), but when it comes to historical movies or movies taking place in ancient times, his modern style can be quite inappropriate and annoying (Gladiator). There are tons of examples that a more orchestral classic score would have been way more suitable for.
Weird notion to have (but not unusual, sadly), as Zimmer's historical scores are almost always appropriate for the style of the films. An old-fashioned orchestral score would not only be against the visual style of the said films (like GLADIATOR, LAST SAMURAI etc), but in many cases also no more appropriate in a historical sense than one that blends electronics and orchestra.
So vice versa, I think Zimmer is at his BEST in historical and/or ethnic settings. Also action films, sci fi films and darker dramas.
I'm NOT generally a fan of his "lighter" drama or comedy scores, however.

Do "Disney" and "M Night Shyamalan" count as genres? Cuz they're the exceptions of modern-day Newton-Howard for me, although the bookend tracks in Red Sparrow are also great.
Steve Jablonsky should return to anime, cuz Steamboy remains his singular opus.
Maybe Ramin Djawadi should stick with remakes, regarding my appreciation of Fright Night.

I'm a big fan of James Newton Howard's more well-developed orchestral scores (WYATT EARP or PRINCE OF TIDES for example) but am put right to sleep by his big-bombast junk like WATER WORLD -- loud but lacking in recognizable melody or thematic development. Boom Boom Boom Boom. I thought that film sucked big time as well. (Hmmm, maybe there's a connection there.)
Lacking in MELODY? It has one of his best and most memorable themes of all time. I consider WATERWORLD not only JNH's best score, but also one of my top 10 favourite scores of all time. Also a big fan of the movie. But good to see that there's a 'junk----masterpiece' spectrum here where we can both place ourselves at each end, respectively. 
Yes, YES!!! Finally I agree AGAIN on something with THOR!! I think 100% the same as what Thor said above. I'm happy and full with love again, my friend!
