I guess they met up at the Oscars one year & banged heads as all professionals do - or dinners at that dirty steak-house in the US where all composers go to get a belly full, Jerry recommends.

As I mentioned above Morricone's first Oscar nomination came years after Herrmann died. So no steakhouse.

Benny, what do you think of Morricone's music?
"I hate it."
You haven't even heard it yet!
"If it's bad, I'll hate it because I hate bad composing, and if it's good, I'll be envious and hate all the more. You don't want the opinion of another composer."

We have, in the interview-book "Inseguendo quel suono" (to publish translated in English in 2019), a short Morricone's opinion about Herrmann :
(...) "... at the Parco dai Daini di villa Borghese, in 1983, we performed music by Steiner, Bernstein, Golsdmith, Williams, Hermann, Jarre. In this occasion, the partitures have been sent from USA, and by curiosity I read some of them. That of "Psycho" di Herrmann was magnificent, clear, written by a unique hand, his." (...)

My apologies for the rapid translation, maybe a little clumsy. The Morricone's words are not surprising.

I remember reading an interview of Herrmann in the soundtrack magazine that Herrmann said to the journalist "so you think I am the greatest film composer of all time?' Funnily he received the reply ' No, Alfred Newman' And Herrmann just accepted the answer mentioning something like 'Yes, Yes I understand' Maybe he was in a good mood. Great story though.
