A wonderful score indeed Kev. One that fans of the maestro's music love but that most others have never heard of and that's a great pity. Glad you picked up a copy. Enjoy!

Yes, very good score. I don't play it loads and loads these days, but it's a very good score.

Great score, and quite apart from the brilliant and aptly glittering "silver of the mine" tracks, there's a theme which for me is the perfect example of Morricone's inspirational melodic work. It starts off with a rising and engaging tune with a couple of repetitions. It then morphs into a B section, which itself would be a memorable theme, and which acts as a sort of bridge. And THEN he introduces a C melody, which is a variation of the B theme, equally attractive. And THEN! he plays all three together, and they harmonise perfectly. A stunning track when you first play it, only increasing in awesomeness when you break it down. In short, Kev, you're an idiot for missing it in the first pass. Affectionately yours, TG.

Just to add to the chorus of appreciation for this score. I have been trying to listen to more Morricone, but outside the "classics" there are quite a number I have no idea of how enjoyable they are (notably those seemingly innumerable scores for Italian films with one gorgeous cue surrounded by weird, dirgy suspense). Anyway, I digress, Nostromo strikes me as one of Morricone's most underrated scores. It rarely seems to come up as a classic score, but both The Tropical Variation and The Silver of the Mine would easily side alongside the rest of the contents of a Morricone concert. My only real gripe is that it's a double CD release, but barely longer than a single CD and a couple of the repeats could easily have been snipped to make it a single disc release. Still a great album and worth nabbing for any Morricone fan.

I finally acquired this Morricone score -- and it is a beautiful work. Full of soaring vocals, quirky use of orchestral colors including pan pipes/flutes, and often offering a dazzling collage of sounds that are disparate but nevertheless make perfect, beautiful, music. Rather like some of Ives. I love those churning, roiling sections of the score -- and the lyrical moments are pure joy. Don't know why it took me so long to get this -- luckily the price was fairly OK and the used copy I bought looks brand new. Now to find the miniseries (I gather VHS is the only option or some YouTube posts). Has anyone watched the miniseries?

It's a favorite of mine too... I picked it up back in the day when it was released. Never saw the miniseries though.

I can’t remember whether I knew it was a Morricone project before seeing it (no useful internet gossip in those days) but I watched it because I read the Joseph Conrad novel for my English A level at the age of 18. It was the most boring book I’d read up to that point, and probably still is. As I recall, in the first hundred pages literally nothing of interest is described. I thought the series had to be more entertaining than the book, and so it was. But it wasn’t a high bar. The music, of course and as described in my earlier post, is wondrous.

I ordered an ancient VHS boxed tape set of the miniseries -- with fingers crossed that the grand ol' tape deck doesn't disintegrate from the shock of being awakened after a long dormancy.
