Many film adaptations of Wuthering Heights. Many different scores....let's compare. Newman, Legrand, Sakamoto, etc.

Amazingly, I have no WUTHERING HEIGHTS soundtrack, although I'm a sucker for period pieces like this and the scores that accompany them (and a big fan of JANE EYRE by the other Brontë sister). So I'm up for some recommendations!

Newman's score is considered a classic, but my preference is for Legrand's; in fact, this score is my favorite of Legrand's.

Come to think of it, I do have a track or two from the Legrand on a compilation. That's a good one.

My two favorites are Alfred Newman's score and Ryuichi Sakamoto's score. Both are lovely.

Alfred Newman has still stayed on top.

I just listened to the Legrand version last weekend. It's the only one I know. I've never seen a film nor read the book.

In a review of a newly recorded opera of WUTHERING HEIGHTS (I believe by Carlisle Flloyd), a reviewer at LISTEN magazine professed that the best musical adaptation that best captured the essence of the classic Bronte tale was not Herrmann's opera (sniffing haughtily as he wrote the words, I do not doubt), but Newman's wonderful score.

I'm quite fond of the Legrand score, and Sakamoto delivers a memorable and haunting main theme.

I'm curious about the following scores that haven't had the exposure of the Newman/Legrand/Sakamoto(/Herrmann or Floyd for that matter) works...

Raúl Lavista scored a Mexican adaptation in 1954.

Carl Davis scored a 1978 miniseries.

Tôru Takemitsu scored a Japanese adaptation in 1988.

Stephen Trask scored a 2003 modern-looking adaptation.

Ruth Barrett (Victoria) scored a 2009 version with Tom Hardy as Heathcliff.

The most recent adaptation (this year) was scored by someone I've never heard of: Hilgrove Kenrick.

Go on IMDb and you'll see there are many more besides. This story has been adapted so many times...

I have the Tom Hardy DVD, and Ruth Barrett's music really didn't grab me. People here seem to love Legrand's score, and I think Legrand is marvelous, but I never warmed to his score. Me bad.

It is an amazing love story and a perfect vehicle to a lush, romantic score.

It is interesting that Legrand based both Thomas Crown and Wuthering around a shifting back-and-forth between minor and major.
