Although it appears as no surprise at all, the news is now official since a couple of days: the Maestro has announced his decision to stop writing soundtracks, save for his friend Giuseppe Tornatore of course! He has turned down two American movies as well as an Italian one offered by an important director whose name is not mentioned. To me, it means that the greatest composer to have ever worked for the cinema is now retiring. Here are two brief articles about this moving piece of news, one in Italian one in German:

https://www.rtl.it/notizie/articoli/ennio-morricone-quasi-90-anni-e-tante-riflessioni/

https://www.bote.ch/nachrichten/kultur/morricone-komponiert-keine-filmmusik-mehr;art46444,1124238

You may wonder whether Morricone is busy with other projects. Well, according to the German article, he's about to complete a piece for two pianos and violin. So he's at least writing his own music. Let's hope he's enjoying it.

Strangely enough, he says he'll go on with concerts and that standing two hours on the podium is OK for him!

What a sad day, but I supposed if he's stopping, then it means he knows it's time for some reason or another.

He's explaining that there are too many constraints when working for the cinema. For a man of his age, I can easily understand it.

Has he not made this same pronouncement before, only to come back?

He indeed did it back in 1984, saying he would dedicate himself to his concert music, but he was much younger by then. So I doubt he'll change his mind. But we still can expect the Tornatore projects.

What happened to that film Tornatore was making about Ennio? Is that still in the works?

With an ouevre 3 or 4 times the size of most other film composers, we can hardly whinge if he stops considering all the music available to us from his pen!!
It was a remarkable thing that he was still working and if it means he will write say 2 more brilliant projects for tornatore considering what their previous collaborations have brought us, im thrilled at that prospect.
Lately we have had italian rai projects that dont make a CD anyway so him taking longer over tornatore films is kinda great news.

Yeah, but exactly what new constraints has he experienced that he hasn't experienced for the last decade? I think there's something else behind this move.

I thought that was Morrissey.

It says quite a lot about Morricone's stature, talent, and versatility that at his age he is able to step back and decline offers. Most composers his age have already fallen out of favor. Look what happened in the sixties with composers like Waxman, Herrmann, Newman, Friedhofer, and Steiner getting fewer and fewer offers.

I thought that was Daniel Day Lewis.

I thought that was Zimmer writing superhero scores.

I thought that was Joaquin Phoenix.

Geez, I hope people don't expect me to still be working at 90.

Maybe he got pissed off that something he recorded some 15 months ago might have got rejected since there has been nothing released in the meantime (?).

Damn, and I've just completed my Morricone collection. Now I have nothing to look forward to.

Saying he will only do films with Tornatore is like Williams saying he will only do Spielberg films. A) It is pretty much already true B) He might be talked into breaking that rule. For instance possibly Tarantino's ONCE UPON A TIME IN HOLLWOOD.

Well, of course most of us don't, but he's the one saying he'll still score films by one guy, so he's still going. And who knows -- if things hadn't apparently changed over night in some mystery unexplained way, he'd still be scoring films for anybody, so apparently he's a feisty old shoe.

Age didn't stop Russ Garcia from flying around the world and doing events, death did.

I have a feeling Morricone will be scoring all the superhero films that Zimmer says NO to since his promise to do no more superhero films.

No, it isn't. Is that guy also a Morricone fan?

Regarding Morricone's decision, one important reason repeated in the articles that he already gave in recent years is the responsibility ("Verantwortung" in German) it implies to accept to score a movie.
However, I agree with Bill. We certainly can't complain. When I started collecting his records way back in the early 80's, I hardly could have imagined that the Maestro would still be active more than 35 years later!

As for Tornatore's GEEK (or whatever other title in case where it has been changed in the meantime), I guess it must be ready by now. However, it's difficult to find any reliable information about it. Even the director's FB page is of no help. We can only suppose that Tornatore will first release the documentary about Morricone in November and that this movie will come out later in 2019.
