I've just started watching the Season 5 premiere of Magnum PI, titled 'Echoes of the Mind' (originally aired 27th September 1984). The first scene features a car being driven along a road late at night. And for some reason, the music playing in the background (not on the car radio) is the End titles from Blade Runner!

Listen for yourself:

And yes, that is Sharon Stone arguing with herself.

It's the New American Orchestra version which was from the first soundtrack album (not used in the film). Does anyone know how this might have come about? Different studios, for a start. It's probably something as simple as someone behind the scenes liking the piece and wanting to use it in the show. But if there's a story, I'd love to know what it is.

I'm guessing someone saw a link between the car driving shots here and the end credit car driving shots in BLADE RUNNER (the extended edition).

The usage is mentioned on imdb trivia, but there's no added explanation. Maybe they thought it was a generic car cruising library cue. Given a choice of cheezy '80s soundtrack music, they should have gone with Moroder's cruising cue from CAT PEOPLE, "To the Bridge."

That scene looked like a screen test for Basic Instinct. I could almost hear Jerry and the NPO!

Yeah more like disco Blade Runner.

Yeah more like disco Blade Runner.

It sounds like someone temped it into the scene and it was cheaper for Mike Post and his team to do a cover version for the show then license the original recording.

A very common practice in the 70's and 80's for TV shows.

While it's very similar to the NAO version, after listening carefully I don't think it is their version myself...
