My vote is for Lawrence of Arabia! I don't know what seems bigger, the grand visuals or the expansive music! Speaking of expansive music, I see there is a 2 CD set of the complete score of LoA released by Tadlow Music (SAE #TADLOW012), but it's not the original soundtrack recording conducted by Maurice Jarre (it's a whole new recording conducted by Nic Raine). Would it be possible to produce a complete score CD of the ORIGINAL soundtrack (fully restored of course!), or are some elements lost/destroyed forever, which is why we have re-recordings like Tadlow's?

Have to be Cape Fear - the movie partnership was brill, Hermann showed his psychological tools when Cady got out of hand - killing the dog cue had that sweeping attack of orchestration - simply amazing Hermann was the symphonic master, the school attack was big an powerful had slickness an finesse - also the finer relaxed moments, Cady at the Club bar was pretty cool love that laid back jazzy music, riffs.

First time i watched this movie I actually thought it was Hitchcock - Herrmann as the duo were notorious together, the actual style does resemble AH the way the narrative plays out. Anyway, J. Lee Thompson was no slouch - a renowned director love his work - this #movie & score.

I know its US release was 1963 but ...

1962 was the year for Dr. No...

... should anyone have overlooked it.

Lonely Are the Brave for me, of course. But it was a simply AMAZING year, with lots of great scores left off this list even.

Really? Aside from the debut of the Bond theme, it's otherwise a rather crap score. (Bond wallops a tarantula: the music wallops along with him - one of the worst examples of Mickey-Mousing ever heard.)

My best of '62 includes:

To Kill a Mockingbird
Lawrence of Arabia
Mutiny on the Bounty
Jules et Jim
Freud
Cape Fear
Taras Bulba
Experiment in Terror
Boccaccio '70
Ride the High Country
Carnival of Souls (for that creepy distant organ music)

A great year for film scores, but since To Kill a Mockingbird may be my all-time favorite score I guess that'll be my 1962 favorite.

I have to second this. It's sublime and transcendental, and changed the game for "subtlety" in film scoring. Plus, one of the finest melodies ever written by anyone, ever. I like a lot of stuff written this year, but for me, no contest.

Now, had EL CID been released just a few mere weeks later than in was in December '61, this might have been a harder call...

Birdman of Alcatraz gives TKaM some serious competition from the same composer IMO...and TKaM is one of my favorite scores of all time, in-film.

Interesting. I'll have to check it out, somehow it's never been on my radar!

You are correct regarding LOA. The original is not available for release. That said the Tadlow version is fine and includes the full score. Even including a couple of snippets that ere cut from the film. Be aware that LOA takes up one cd while the second includes music from other Jarre scores. A very good release...
