Well, I’ve got my ticket. Newcastle, 18th October. With any luck I’ll be able to arrange some meetings in the Toon during the day so no frantic rush up the motorway after work.

I think my last visit to the Tyne Theatre was to see Sean Bean as Romeo in his RSC days, early 80s.

Just back from Utrecht.
A nice appreciative crowd, not sold out.
It's more a Rock concert than a film music performance, some things work in their beefed-up version, others don't.
But a great experience and I highly doubt I'll ever get the opportunity to see the Horror-master again.

Sean Bean as Romeo in the early 80s???

Sheesh, even back then his characters couldn't live to see the end credits...

Heh - nice, but I was mistaken. It’s not the place I thought it was. However just enjoyed a BBQ at Red’s and I’ll be moseying on down to the venue, where the doors open in 45 minutes or so...

Well poke me in the eye with a sharpened mango! It’s in the old Stoll Picture House, where I spent many happy afternoons in the early to mid 70s in the school holidays. There were three cinemas in a row. This one went bust in 1974 and apparently reopened as a theatre and concert venue in the mid80s, one of the others burnt down and the third seems to have been changed into a pub.

Have a great time, TG! Looking forward to your review.

Thanks for your interest!

And the rest of you, you can't fool me, you're all with child to know about this concert smile.

The seats haven't changed in the old Stoll in the last 40-odd years, still uncomfortable after sitting for 90 minutes with nothing happening (no, I didn't see Star Trek The Motion Picture there on release) but when John Carpenter brought his slightly nepotistic band onto the stage - son Cody and godson Daniel Davies made up half the strength - the hard seats and lack of legroom were all but forgotten for 90 minutes or so.

Getting off to a great start with Escape From New York, JC ran through many of his themes, including a couple of the "Lost" ones. As you'd expect, clips of the films were played behind them, and it made me want to catch up with them again. Smoke effects, of course, during The Fog, and there was a knowledgeable cheer when the band played a bar or two of a new "song", as Carpenter called them, then stopped and put on dark glasses for one particular track.

More wordless minimalist rock than anything else, this was a thoroughly enjoyable set. The audience profile was younger than I expected, which probably reflects the new Halloween as much as anything. The music is deceptively simple but beautifully realised. Very glad that I made the trip.

Glad you enjoyed it TG!
Can you tell me what time he started and finished? I'm guessing Manchester will be the same.
And I don't suppose there were any signed CDs at the merchandising stall?
Cheers
Roy

From your description Chris, it sounds like he's sticking with the script and show he used 2 years back.
Glad you enjoyed it, it's a pretty cool gig.

I saw him in Toronto last year. Great show. Bring cash for the mech table. Some really great stuff for sale.

Do you mean merch table? Or does it transform into a bipedal battle suit?

Hi Roy

Kick off was 8.30 and it wound up without encore around 9.45, both times approximate. I didn’t really get close to the merchandising but there didn’t seem to be anything signed. T-shirts £20, material bag £10? Concert poster in black and white, A3, £10. 2LP sets of the JC Anthology were I think £50. They didn’t seem to have the CDs.

Yep, watched a bit of a 2016 one on YouTube, very similar. Fair enough.

Watch out for both the merch and mech tables. Stay away from the meh table.
