Film opens next week.
Singer was fired, but retained sole directing credit (2/3 was completed when he was 'let go').
Ottman seems to have stayed onboard to score, but the CD is chock full of Queen songs (with the 20th Century Fox logo performed by Brian May and Roger Taylor, no less).
I imagine for a film like this the score would be minimal and maybe act as connective tissue between the songs and just add a bit of emotional support where required.
As a fan of the group growing up and beyond, I'm deffo gonna see this at the cinema. The trailers look okay and Malek looks amazing as Freddie.
What dya reckon?

Go get some!!

;-)

This is a joke attempt - I know these are not related works & different studies. Thank you.

I love Get On Up. Chadwick Boseman was a marvel.

Yep, I'm looking forward to seeing Bohemian Rhapsody.

No score at all. Just a quick moment in which Kamen’s WHO WANTS TO LIVE FOREVER orchestral arrangement is kinda used as underscore. I believe this was done by Ottman using the song’s multitrack stems.

Film was excellent BTW :-)

Yeah, that was kind of a letdown. But who needs underscore when you have Queen's amazing songs?

Ottman was listed in the credits as 'Live TV Director', I presume in the Top of the Pops scene.

No, Ottman's cameo it in the opening scene.

And the opening bars of Bo-Rap* just before we see him sing the lyrics for the first time.

(* yes, I know, I was shocked too that the band called it this)

Given the success of the film, it would be nice if Ottman got an editing nomination.

Agreed, and it will be well deserved.

I have to say, I'm very pleasantly surprised at how well directed this film is. Don't get me wrong, I like a good deal of Singer's previous films, especially X-Men 2. But, I've never felt he had a really unique style, or frankly was very good with serious material.

Remi Malek is a revelation. I've only seen a handful of things he's been in, and the impression was always, "why does this actor always seem like he's on sedatives?" No doubt my impression of him being lethargic was due to the types of characters he was playing. But, EVERY scene I'd seen him in had this quality.

Here, Malek is a force of nature, much like Mercury was. He is SO good in this, as are the rest of the actors. I was also impressed with how much the other actors look like Brian May, John Deacon, and Roger Taylor.
Malek's approach to Mercury as a character really gave emotional weight to the film. He seemed so lonely in stardom, despite his out-sized personality.

Music bios tend to follow a formula, and while Bohemian Rhapsody isn't much different, it still has things that distinguish it from others in the genre. I particularly love the various recording scenes, as it's always been a fascination of mine how artists approach recording. Ottman's work in these scenes, and the drug induced party/club scenes, was especially effective.

Queen's music was operatic, over the top, but also fun rock & roll. The movie was a great tribute to both Mercury and his and his band mate's music.

It would be interesting to know how much of the finished film is Singer or Fletcher.
Accounts seem to indicate the ship was steadied and the shoot more harmonious after Fletcher took over.
Has Ottman ever been nominated for a best score Oscar?
Would be weird if he finally got one for editing, after some of the great scores he's written.

What's really weird is that there's an editing award at all, given that nobody can really know what they did. And an award-winning editor told me this!

Hah! It's funny that this is probably true.

When one thinks of how much a film can change in the editing room/bay, it's amazing more cinefiles don't know just what a contribution a good editor brings to a movie.

Haha, Shaun, you and Johnny need to go have a pint together.
I don't know what your boggle is with him, but it's nothing a few beers couldn't sort out.

Schiffy, are you (or your colleague) referring to the art of editing in the digital age, as opposed to the old splice and dice days of film?
Obviously in the ago, great editors were credited by the film makers for guiding the ebb and flow and overall rhythm of their movies into successes.
Have standards and opinions changed within the industry?
