FRIDAY, OCTOBER 19

A QUIET PLACE 2---John Krasinski confirmed he is writing the sequel, “That was my intention for the movie itself. Then I had this small idea for a sequel, but I didn’t think it would go anywhere. So, I said to the studio, ‘Just go do the movie with somebody else.’ They heard some pitches, and I told [producer] Drew [Form] about this little idea. And he told me to think about it a little longer. And then I thought, ‘This might really work.’ So, I’m currently writing the sequel.”

THE GOLDSBORO BROKEN ARROW---movie underway based on the book about a 1961 incident in which a B-52 bomber broke up in midair and released two 3.8 megaton nuclear bombs that almost detonated in Goldsboro, North Carolina. Each bomb was 250 times more powerful than the atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima. The movie will focus on Lt. Jack ReVelle, a bomb disposal expert, who was in charge of disarming the bombs. David Permut (HACKSAW RIDGE) is the producer.

KNIVES OUT---Ana de Armis (BLADE RUNNER 2049) will co-star with Daniel Craig, Chris Evans and Michael Shannon in the Rian Johnson murder mystery movie.

THE TERROR---Derek Mio will star in Season 2 of the AMC horror series as Chester Nakayama, a Japanese-American who becomes a war hero. Josef Kubota Wladyka (NARCOS) will direct Season 2 about an evil entity that starts in a Japanese-American internment camp and travels to the Pacific Theater in World War II.

CATS---Judi Dench will play Old Deuteronomy in the movie musical.

SUPERGIRL--Lex Luthor will appear in Season 4.

BOB DYLAN---biomovie underway inspired by Dylan's "Blood on the Tracks" album. Luca Guadagnino (SUSPIRA remake) is the director. Richard LaGravenese (THE FISHER KING) is the writer.

ARKANSAS---Vince Vaughn and Liam Hemsworth star in this movie about two drug dealers involved in a Dixie Mafia drug deal that goes awry.

ARE YOU THERE GOD? IT'S ME, MARGARET---James L. Brooks movie underway based on the novel.

I KNOW THIS MUCH IS TRUE---Mark Ruffalo stars as identical twins Dominick and Thomas Birdsey in this HBO miniseries based on the book.

GODZILLA---NASA named a constellation after the classic Godzilla movie monster, "When a massive star runs out of fuel and collapses under its own weight, or when two orbiting neutron stars spiral together and merge, a new black hole — and high-speed jets — may form. The result is a gamma-ray burst, the most powerful explosion in the cosmos. These monstrous blasts, which occur somewhere in the distant universe every day or so according to observations by Fermi's Gamma-ray Burst Monitor, would make even Godzilla envious".

TRIVIA---visual effects artist Joel Hynek was nominated for two Academy Awards and won one. Hynek is the son of astronomer and UFO expert J. Allen Hynek. He was an advisor on the US Air Force's UFO Project Blue Book and originated the "Close Encounters" classification system for UFO incidents.

Joel Hynek was nominated for an Academy Award for PREDATOR and WHAT DREAMS MAY COME. He won for WHAT DREAMS MAY COME.

Hynek is the son of UFO expert J. Allen Hynek, who originated the UFO "Close Encounters" classification system and, fittingly, had a cameo in Steven Spielberg's CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND.

QUIET PLACE sequel will only work if they prequel it i.e. tell the story of how the creatures came to the surface.
Free story idea: fracking

It's flattering that Hollywood spends billions of dollars to "prevent" me from going to the movies, or from crawling back to cable TV (seven year without it this January).

Maybe it's because I've aged past their targeted demographic...

THE GOLDSBORO BROKEN ARROW
*Very* interested in this. Hopefully less fiction, more fact.

It saddens me to see all my favourite 'one-off' movies of recent years (BABY DRIVER, DON'T BREATHE, QUIET PLACE), being given needless sequels which will, most likely, only deaden and/or ruin the impact of the fine original.
I wish they would follow the E.T plan.

Kev, I kind of think that A QUIET PLACE might be rather ripe for a sequel. I'd like to know a bit more about the earlier days of the alien invasion.

Spoilers ahead:

Also, I'd like to see how the mother and her three children continue to survive and if the pockets of people left in the world finally defeat those pesky Giant Ears. I would hope the sequel would be as good as the original, so I'm crossing my fingers.

Maybe Joan, but for me, I imagine the shocking tension would be gone.
The first film succeeded on being one of the most tension-filled, dreadful film experiences I'd had in years.
In fact, plot holes only really appeared upon post-film discussion, but they would now be front and centre for me.

Yes, Kev, the original was full of tension, and I'd hate to see such tension disappear in a sequel.

JOAN HUE:

I posted a few months ago that John Krasinski was thinking about the sequel focusing on different people and another family. Here's the gist of it:

“The thing that I loved in the movie, where my mind kept wandering as we were making it, was the question of who was on the other end of those fires, when the father lights the fire and in the distance those other fires light up. How did those people survive? How did that old man survive?”

“In the extreme these characters are going through, there’s no room to think about that. They’re there, there’s an old man who’s about to scream, they just have to deal with that. I think it would be interesting to see what’s going on elsewhere at this same time."

Keep in mind, this was a few months ago, so maybe things have changed.

Yep, I remember that post and was then and am still hoping for a sequel. There are interesting pieces in the original that still need to be explored.

WARLOK:

I first heard about the Goldsboro B-52 nuclear bomb incident when a friend of mine in junior high school told me one of the bombs landed in his grandmother's back yard.

He is gonna need a lot of help writing the script.

Wow. Did he hold onto it?

That would be both amazing and somewhat terrifying.

Didn't they already make this movie? Yes, that was a rhetorical question. I love that film.

WARLOK:

Yep, as I posted before, each of the bombs was 3-4 megatons which is 250 times more powerful than the Hiroshima atomic bomb. His grandmother's backyard was almost ground zero.
Lt. ReVelle said a resulting explosion would have a 100% destruction zone diameter of 17 miles.
