Apu, the Clerk at the Kwik-E-Mart on The Simpsons for many years has been in the news of late. Some want him gone, some claim him beloved and endearing and want him to stay on the show. Any thoughts on any of this? Do you have fond memories of past episodes featuring Apu?

Years ago when he was going to be deported for not having his green card, he lamented a great line, "There are so many things I wanted to do and have done unto me." But if Indians see him like Willie Best playing those horrible black caricatures, I can understand the resentment. It's different from the other Simpson caricatures, yes?

Can't believe this series is still going.
It's been running on vapours for years now.
Will Apu stay or go? Will anyone be watching to know or care?

It used to be, "if you don't like it, don't watch it."

Now it's "if you don't like it, ban it."

One hint: this is PC so most likely it's not one of the "victims" complaining but someone on behalf of people who most likely don't feel themselves victimised. It's status and scoring points. Just keep doing it folks, you keep pushing until the mask comes off, revealing your hypocrisy and disingenuous nature, and you get consumed by your own fire and the flames of discontent from the people who will finally have had enough of you. Can't wait for the culling to start.

They didn't ban poor students when the controversy over Bart's "Underachiever and Proud of It" was all over the place.

You'd be hard pressed to find a non-stereotype character on the series. I get that it's racial over, say, intellect, or old people, but since they make fun of kids with special needs (Ralph Wiggum), police (his dad) and over the top religious people (Stupid Flanders), I'm shocked they don't ban the entire series.

I agree, the glory days of the series are long gone and I haven't gotten a genuine laugh from the show since the movie.

I don't understand what you're ranting about, especially since the guy who launched a campaign against Apu's caricature is Indian-American. I just don't know if most Indian-Ams feel this way. If you don't see a problem with those cringe-worthy African-American half-wit characters from early Hollywood films, it makes sense this is an irrelevant concern or point of view.

lets review.

he's a volunteer fireman
he goes to town meetings.
he runs a small business.
he seems to be everyone's friend.
thanks to Homer butting into his life he has a bunch of kids.

If this bothers people then I want Fat Tony, Luigi, Krusty the clown,
All the Anti-Christian jokes, poking fun at Jews and others pulled.

Then, Just like real life, it then sucks.

I'm not disagreeing with your list of positives for Apu. But are you aware of what the complaints are based upon? That is, watched the short film that started the discussion called "The Problem With Apu" by comedian Hari Kondabolu?

No, no that's bull.
it cannot any more offensive than the other example I gave.
If Apu was not on the show. What positive view would you have?

He is not a passive charter.
Maybe Mr. Kondabolu can have Apu run over by Chief of Police Chief Wiggumigams. (that should fit his view)

Or maybe Fat Tony can have Apu bumped off for not paying his protection money?l(lets offend everyone)
End the show! If you are so afraid to offend. That you cannot poke fun.

I dont understand - you did or didnt watch the movie? If you didn't, then are you disagreeing with just the conclusion reached, rather than any of the points made to reach the conclusion?

ok! I gave it a look.
He is full of bull.

The Cleveland show.
Mike Henry (VI)
Actor | Producer | Writer ( a white guy) His most popular voice characters include
Cleveland Brown,(an Afro American man). So guess we should pull this show too because we have a White man doing a brown man (aka blackface).

So I hope Hari Kondabolu is now happy. Because there would be no Apu in anybody's community. You know sometimes you can just over think.

Krusty offends me. Typical Jewish comedian stereotypes.

Wait a sec.... I LOVE LOVE LOVE it anytime a show features a slimey, vulgar, cutthroat Jewish movie mogul (like my cousin Sumner Redstone ) or agent. My favorite has to be Mark Lapidus from EPISODES.

I believe the Indian filmmaker is sincere. I have heard him interviewed.
Just think he is misguided

Well, you know what they say. You don't know how someone feels until you walk in their moccasins. Er, well those other Indians might say that.

You forgot to add a mediocre PC comedian. If Apu's banned why not Willy or any Irish character? You could say they are offensive stereotypes too. The attempt to write out Apu is driven by ideological PC warriors who are seeking to frame society in their view. History is filled with many examples of ideological warriors who have sought to reorder society based on their values.

Try watching the FX show Son of the Beach sometimes.

The entire premise is built upon the broadest of racial, ethnic and gender sterotypes.

Nowhere in the universe will you see a more wretched hive if racism, sexism, and homophobia.
God help me, I do love it so!

So his being Indian has nothing to do with his feelings about being stereotyped? Labeling any attempt to critique society as "PC" isnt an argument.
I think the fact that noone knows the best way to handle the issue shows it's not clear-cut. Maybe Apu would never be a character in India, but is he really as bad as a "minstrel" caricature here in USA? I dunno.
