Awesome! I've heard this movie was in the works, can't wait to see it. Maybe another Oscar nom for Newman

Interesting choice for a composer. Then again, I seriously doubt this is going to have anything in common with Shore's LOTR vernacular, so Newman is as good a choice as any.

That’s to be hoped for, at least.

Don’t get me wrong, you’ll find no bigger fan of PJ’s LotR films and Shore’s scores than I, but this will be a film about Tolkien - not Peter Jackson’s interpretation of his works. References to anything outside the novels themselves are something I do not want in this film, musically or otherwise.

I’m really looking forward to this, and can’t wait to get our first glimpse of the film. Though if it ends up positioned for awards, that may be a while yet.

Seems to address the young Tolkien's formative experiences in the WWI era. Despite the obvious parallels between LOTR and the rise of Nazism and the atomic bomb, the author always insisted that his story was conceived long before the Second World War and was inspired partly by the loss of almost all his friends on the Western Front. From outward tragedy came a richly imaginative inner life. Can that be dramatized on screen? We'll see.

Tolkien's midlife friend, C.S. Lewis, has also seen his life (or one phase of it) dramatized as Shadowlands. It was most effective as a telefilm starring Joss Ackland but later achieved wide success on stage (with William Nicholson) and screen (Anthony Hopkins).

I just hope the film and score are more interesting than SAVING MR. BANKS, but I'm kinda expecting something in the same territory (music-wise, at least)....

It's been a fairly quiet year for Newman so I'm looking forward to this one.

I think at this point in the game, expecting Newman to change his spots is pretty remote.
And why should he. He's developed a very good career from his established sound.
Did John Barry break away from his tried and true unique style?
Did James Horner stop sampling from the classics or recycling his own material?
No and No. They didn't need to. Why should a composer with his own personal style stop doing that.
Even Williams, Goldsmith and Morricone always sound like themselves and their classical faves.
If TM scores this one like Jarhead, I'll be sad.
If he scores it like Saving Mr Banks, I'll be happier.

I finally watched this film the other night.
It's a real middle-of-the-roader.
Never bad enough to be unwatchable, but also plodding the average/predictable bio route to avoid gaining any form of stand-out greatness.
It looks handsome enough, and all the actors are fine in that 'tirribly Downton' type of way.
It's very bitty, jumping here and there between his WWI experiences and early years and education/school days (with some obvious VFX during scenes - mostly WWI battle ones - to let the audience know how/why this guy would go on to write the LOTR books).
It feels like DEAD POET'S SOCIETY with a visual dash of YOUNG SHERLOCK HOLMES and the like.
I remember playing the Thomas Newman score on Spotify or YouTube when it first came out and thinking 'Yep, same old boring/predictable Thomas Newman' and moving on.
Obviously, as often-times happens, when we hear the music in relation to its reason for existing, it can change our perspective and emotional responses.
It still sounds like SAVING MR TOLKIEN at times, but I really enjoyed it a lot more hearing it in situ.
He adds a real emotional layer and depth to many scenes, even if he stays far in the background and away from any 'hitting you over the head' type manipulation.
Yes, it's typical Thomas Newman, so his detractors can argue the same.
But if you like his style (and I most times do), there is a lot to enjoy from his work here.
Any other fans of the music and/or film?

Like you, I thought the film was so-so. But I absolutely LOVED the score...in a whole other league than SAVING MR. BANKS, IMO. I wrote a small review of it here:

Loved the score. Haven't seen the movie, despite my great love of the author in subject. I just didn't hear anything good about the film so it was never a priority.

I liked the film very much. The score was also good but not my favourite Newman.

One of my favourites scores of his recent stuff. Didnt really fancy the film much but sometimes liking a score can push you towards a watch so maybe i should try. Folk might argue Thomas's stuff is same old, same old but he’s so damn good at it i still look forward to every new release. I thought he created some great emotional moments in Tolkien that i almost don’t want spoiled by seeing the actual film. Sometimes…. in your head is better smile

I don't think it's one of those films that would ruin the music.
There's nothing actually wrong with the film, other than it lacks any sparks of innovation or gripping drama.
It looks very good and for me, seeing the film actually enhanced my experience of Newman's music (which was, admittedly, quite low when I played it without any film reference).

I thought it was a good film and the Thomas Newman score fitted perfectly. His wonderful cue “Fellowship” is always on my Thomas Newman playlists.

Zero interest in the film, but I've revisited the soundtrack often over the last couple years for a few key cues, and I really like it.
