WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 14

THE MANDALORIAN---photos from the tv series set shows three actors wearing Stormtrooper armor, two in white and one in black. The black armor suggests he is a Death Trooper, who first appeared in ROGUE ONE: A STAR WARS STORY.

ALIEN: AWAKENING---information on the shelved sequel to ALIEN: COVENANT involved the Engineers seeking revenge against David after his black goo attack against them. Speculation is the script by John Logan had David using Xenomorphs to fight the Engineers and the Engineers pursuing David to moon LV-426 featured in the original movie. This would have led to the origin of the Space Jockey and the spaceship filled with eggs that were discovered by the crew of the Nostromo on LV-426.

MASTER AND COMMANDER---today is the 15th anniversary of the naval epic about the HMS Surprise during the Napoleonic Wars that was supposed to launch a franchise based on the novel series. The Peter Weir-directed movie starred Russell Crowe, Paul Bettany and James D'Arcy. Although it received ten Oscar nominations, the $150 million movie only earned $212 million at the box office and barely broke even.
Co-producer Duncan Henderson said, “This is definitely one of my favorite films to work on. Even when I was getting ground down during filming by the process of keeping the picture going, I would go down to the edge of the tank where we were shooting and looking at this giant replica ship… and I realized I was standing next to my dream of what I always wanted to do in making movies. I’ve never forgotten that.”
Henderson added, “I had one of the biggest stars in Hollywood. I had one of the best directors in the world at the time. I had over $100 million to shoot on location on a real ship and on a giant model ship. My dream of filmmaking was right there in front of me.”
D'Arcy said, “I remember Tom [Rothman, head of 20th Century Fox] was really disappointed. He envisioned that this was going to be a film that would launch a bunch of sequels. To this day, I’m not quite sure why the film didn’t do so well.”

WILD CARDS---Hulu is developing two tv shows based on the novel series edited by George RR Martin.

NINE LIVES---Common (JOHN WICK) and Jonny Lee Miller (ELEMENTARY) will star in this movie based on the Ursula K. Le Guin sci fi novelette.

THE ORVILLE---STAR TREK tv veterans Marina Sirtis and Robert Picardo will guest star in Season 2 in which Ed and Kelly's relationship takes a new turn, they battle the Krill again and they return to the planet Moclus. Season 2 premiers on December 30.

RED STICK---NBC/Patricia Cornwell tv series underway which, “follows Dr. Annie Dodge who is summoned from New York to her hometown of Baton Rouge, LA, after the sudden death of her father, the city’s beloved coroner. Now, as she’s mourning the loss of her childhood hero, Annie finds herself reluctantly stepping into her father’s role to solve an ongoing murder while navigating the complicated waters of Bayou politics, Southern hospitality and a simmering past romance.”

BLACK HAMMER---Legendary Entertainment bought the movie and tv rights to the comic book.

THE GOOD COP---Netflix cancelled the series.

ACADEMY AWARDS---the controversial Most Popular Film Oscar that was considered dead may be resurrected according to Academy President John Bailey, “[It] seemed like a good idea, the board approved it, announced it, but we got a lot of pushback. So the board reconsidered and tabled it – which is not to say that the idea is dead. Even after a stake was driven through its heart, there’s still interest."
A source said the effort to revive the award is an attempt to boost sagging tv ratings for the Oscar ceremony.

DIRT MAN---Stan Lee's daughter, J.C., said she and her father were working on a new superhero named Dirt Man. J.C. said she originated the idea and her father was helping her up until his death.

THE GLORIAS: A LIFE ON THE ROAD---Alicia Vikander is in negotiations to play Gloria Steinem in her 20-40s in this biomovie based on Steinem's memoir. Julianne Moore will play Steinem over 40 years old. Bette Midler is in talks to play a supporting role.

TEMPTATION ISLAND---USA Network is rebooting the reality series with Mark L. Walberg returning as the host.

TRIVIA---in REAR WINDOW, Alfred Hitchcock's traditional cameo is in the apartment of the songwriter, who is played by Ross Bagdasarian, creator of Alvin and the Chipmunks.

In REAR WINDOW, Alfred Hitchcock's cameo is in the apartment of the songwriter who is played by Ross Bagdasarian.

I hadn't heard that Fox shelved the next Alien movie. Good riddance. I couldn't care less about the exploits of an android sociopath with a god complex. Had the story stuck with Shaw it would have been far more interesting. To me anyway.

I really enjoyed Master and Commander, but i did enjoy the books too. Crowe was excellent as Aubrey and Bettany stole it almost as Maturin. Shame there won't be another.

Wasn't a fan of the terrible Alien prequels, glad Awakening has been shelved. Sounds as bad as the others. Fassbender was the only interesting thing about them.

Dirt Man. Can't imagine it being good but I stopped reading comics 22 years ago.

I liked Covenant. I would have enjoyed the final(?) chapter in this current trilogy. Ah well.

Memo to ALIEN crew:

If you are being menaced by a creature who is ten times more powerful than humans- do NOT split up into small groups and go hunting. Safety in numbers. I repeat SAFETY IN NUMBERS!!!!!###

I'm with you Scott. I really wanted to see the next Alien movie after Alien: Covenant. David and his story needed some kind of finish.

Master & Commander was terrific! Just as with TRON Legacy, I`d love to see another installment.

If Hollywood elites smile wish to thumb a nose at box offices, sinking their money into non-blockbuster things, do these two.

I was also not aware they had had officially shelved a COVENANT sequel, only the Blomkamp project. If that is the latest news, I refuse to accept it just yet. No way they're going to leave that story unfinished. I'm fairly confident there will be a sequel at some point, either by Scott himself or someone else.

I am firmly in the camp of wanting to see more A L I E N...though if the recent rumours of a TV project are true then it's possible that it might replace Awakening after the numbers for Covenant were less than stellar (though by no means a flop).

Probably not a bad idea....can get away with more on TV anyway....

Alien is going to end up winnowed down into a cheapy low quality tv production, like Poltergeist as franchise was gradually lowered into a subpar shadow of it's former self. It is already about 70% there. Then it will be swept away into the nether land of lost TV shows like the Fantasy Island with Malcolm McDowell.

Aren't you a bucket of sunshine, Ado?

I welcome an ALIEN TV series. With the current standard of great TV writing and execution, I see no reason why it can't be great.

But even more than that, I'd like the film series to continue.

With you, it's about 4 people that want Alien to continue.
A bad idea is a bad idea.
