This has become a BIG thing in the UK in recent years, with some adverts getting full page ads in newspapers and even short trailers before they actually air.
They're usually for big retail departments like Debenhams and John Lewis, or supermarkets like Sainsbury's or M&S.
They have big budgets and are realised like feature films or animated projects.
In the past, some have been quite sweet or good.
But this year, the one's I've seen so far are really shit.
There's one that just seems to show us various stages of Elton John's life!!! And it goes all gooey over him and his mum (whom he never even spoke to for years!!!).
I hope they improve as we get nearer to Chrimbo.
Yours hopefully,
Kevin the Carrot.

This reminds me of Super Bowl adverts. Back in the 90's they were high budget, creative and pushed technical boundaries which made them the most anticipated portion of the event. The last decade or so they've become rather lackluster and ordinary.

The last few years I've made it a personal mission to avoid seeing any of these Christmas adverts. I've done quite well so far :-)

Hey Kev
Not sure of your age, but it was the mid 1970’s and the incredible Woolworth adverts that invented this UK tradition. I was working for Granada Television at the time and these things would take an entire advertising slot at prime time, they were like mini movies all of their own, often full of the then celebrities of the day. They also had a very catchy theme tune/song that played over the top.

If I remember correctly, they began in the first week of December and played once or twice a night on ITV, in the days of only 3 channels in the UK by the way, up until the last full shopping day before Christmas, quite ground breaking for the time.

Never sure how much was paid for by Woolworth's and how much was by the product placement in the advert, but they were truly unique for their time, not checked, but maybe some are on You Tube.

Regards
Andy b

Most have been really terrible this year.
The big companies have become so obsessed that their ads are politically correct enough or diverse enough or woke enough that they've missed the whole point and feeling of Christmas to me.
The only one that has given me a warm, fuzzy, sad, nostalgic glow is the McDonald's one, with a young kid in a hoody, ignoring his inner child (who appears in his midriff) anytime his Mum tries to get him to enjoy Christmas like he used to.
It looks very similar to a Pixar animation.
I also liked a recent McDonald's ad about a teenage lad getting his mum's old car for his birthday/passing his test and how his initial shame and embarrassment turns to joy and appreciation.

In related news, Taika Waititi has directed the new Coca Cola Christmas advert (it's on YouTube).
It's a bit overbaked, but quite cool.

The SuperValu advert on Irish TV is nicely done...

I liked the SKY advert with E.T. and Henry Thomas a couple of years ago.

Thomas, I too love the E.T.-Henry Thomas advertisement. Your Irish ad was also very sweet.

You are welcome, Kev. Also, thanks for that Coke ad. I love it. It made me a bit weepy, and the music in the ad was also very nice.

My daughter loves those 'Holidays are coming' ads for Coca Cola. I didn't mind the Peter Capaldi one a few years ago about a sprout.

But looking up previously on this thread I remember the Woolworths ads fondly. Not especially Christmas ones, but the ones that went "that's the wonder of Woolworths, that's the wonder of good old Woolies...". That takes me back to being a kid, when everyone was still alive! Daft I know, but you know... the parents, Grandma etc. All gone.
