I've never seen this show from the 60's and found it at Netflix, available to rent. Two seasons, great, I thought. Evidentally there are 5 discs for season one. The first two discs of season one are NOT available to rent (for some reason), and can only be added to your 'saved queue'. So, the discs are only available starting with disc 3, and I'd miss the premiere episode and subsequent episodes. I realize this show is so old, everyone on it or involved with it is now dead, and it probably shouldn't matter about 'continuity'. But if YOU have these discs, if I begin watching the series starting with disc 3, will I be missing vital information and character development, or it doesn't matter at all?

Maybe since someone was kind enough to answer this questions someone can finally tell me if Land of the Giants is worth picking up on the cheap?
Solium, 'Michael Rennie Captain of the Titanic'...I'm not sure I understand what this means. Are you saying that the episode that's unavailable on one of the first two discs is about the Titanic? Sounds like it would be too great to miss, at least to me!

If you can't rent the first episode, but you can buy it for $1.99, do it! It's the strongest episode of the series and establishes the premise and characters. It was a very expensive pilot and every dollar is on the screen.
Otherwise, what others have said is true, this is a fun 60's Irwin Allen series. I find the recurring characters likable, but there is no character development to speak of and hardly any humor.
This show really needed something like in The Man from UNCLE or The Wild Wild West where the two leads joked and quipped with each other, this show has none of that and suffers for it.
That being said, I enjoy watching it for its production values and its colorful and fun 60's TV action.

Loved it in the sixties, just like every other Irwin Allen show. But I was only nine years old by 1970....
SO... I have a massive nostalgia buzz for them all. When it comes to watching more than a handful of episodes of course...
So it's the music, plus production values (for so long before the recycling) that wins the day.
Know what? I bet if they were all only twelve episodes long they'd REALLY be regarded as classics now.

Only one season, actually. Two sets of DVDs, but it was only a single 30 episode season.
But if YOU have these discs, if I begin watching the series starting with disc 3, will I be missing vital information and character development, or it doesn't matter at all?
Totally doesn't matter. They never refer back to previous episodes. You don't even know they landed on the Titanic at all, other than knowing in the final episode the cliffhanger goes back to that episode, but only because of the reruns.
All you need to know is in the opening narration used in the first 2/3 of the episodes.
