3. “The Star Wars Trilogy”
Varujan Kojian conducting Utah Symphony, 1983
One of several classic film-score recordings produced for Varèse by George Korngold with London orchestras.

London orchestras?

This album and Varese's Back To The Future Trilogy album have always sold really well at WonderCon. When I would run the Varese booth, no matter how many of these I brought with me, I would always sell out by day two. For us die hard score fans, were like, "hey there's more music left off or hey these aren't complete, or hey these are re-recordings. But to the average listener, a best of album fits them perfect as they were never going to sit through several Back To The Future discs, so a best of all 3 films works great for them and there is a WHOLE lot more of those types then us die hard film score junkies. Also the Star Wars album is one hell of a solid recording smile

Is it any good? I have the OST, of course, which is a favourite (and one of the few 90s soundtracks that non-film music fans know and like), but I never checked out the rerecording. The Edelman material, in particular, seems difficult to replicate in a rerecording format.

I like it but it helps if you think of it as a different animal altogether. IMO it brings the two sides closer to each other; a step back from the Jones material but a step up for Edelman. The Jones stuff is a little more detailed but loses the power and doesn't have that same wonderfully wet sound. By contrast, rather than replicating the Edelman sound the McNeely goes for fuller orchestration which adds some weight. It also resequences the OST in film order, and it works better than the original might have with the single orchestra. So, it's a familiar but much different listening experience.

In addition to what I wrote in my own post, I agree with all of this.

Rudy and Last of the Mohicans, still my 2 all time favorite. Maybe I will try the re-recording of LOTM since we might wait a while before a deluxe release.

#5 and #6 I'm surprised with honestly, and I had no idea "Rudy " was this popular (the movie is invisible in Europe).

3. “The Star Wars Trilogy”
Varujan Kojian conducting Utah Symphony, 1983

is the first CD I ever bought! It was indeed, at the time a great source of unreleased music from "Jedi" and a great rerecording (honestly not the case with the BTTF one imho).

For some reason I actually like the re-recording of the Jones material significantly more. The snare drums just sound ferocious in the McNeely version, and they've always sounded hollow in the OST by comparison (maybe that's due to the wet sound that some people prefer). I miss the synths from "Elk Hunt", but I really prefer the substitution of a real flute for the synth flute in "The Glade" (I think that's the track - whatever that pastoral mid-album track is called). The three included Edelmen pieces are by far the best 3 in his portion of the score, and if memory serves, one wasn't even included in the original OST. I don't know - I had the OST first and always liked the idea of it more than I liked it. The rerecording turned it into a personal favorite.

I like some things better in the re-recording and it does have a better flow with the Edelman stuff (which I never listen to on the original; it just pales so much in comparison to the Jones). That said, I do not prefer the battle music on the re-recording. I get why some find it more thrilling, but one of my favorite things in the piece has always been the insistent but somewhat distant percussion...it created a unique feel. And I feel similarly about Elk Hunt and its synths.

Anyways, I'm glad to have both albums and I'd buy an expansion of Jones's material (with or without the Edelman, frankly) in a heartbeat.

Keep in mind the main theme from Rudy is played in every football game, baseball game and at college events. I've heard it on sports shows as well.

When I ran sales at Varese, we had tons of radio folks asking us about this. Rudy the man has been a key part of selling the album as well. Books, appearances, tv interviews, etc. The man is a force of nature.

Didn't knew all that, thanks for the info! The movie, which is rated 7.5 on imdb, is only available in Zone 1, however.
