I said, "Nah, saw the film".

Oh, you would have passed my test, with that clever answer, no matter what, Graham.

Graham, I’ve read precisely one Conrad novel - Nostromo,..it was the most boring thing I’ve ever read,

Try his "The Secret Sharer." It's a short story and quite easier to get through.

Better yet, find the Orson Welles reading of it. Welles's voice can get a person through anything literary.

the description of Ishmael’s first nights in his lodging are as funny as anything you could wish for.

And no surprise that all of it never made it into the Huston movie, eh?

I think it would be very difficult to represent the innocence of those encounters without provoking more than a few sniggers.

"Aye, ye d*mned whale, and if ye still be alive out yonder, ye might want to avoid the waters around Japan, what with their recent withdrawal from the IWC and that."

Aaaarrrghh!!! I started reading this again. And again (for the third time!) I'm stalled out around Chapter 34.

(I skipped the cetacean chapter, by the way).

Stalled.... out..... must.... get.... mo... ti... vated......

Come on, David - it’s the great white whale, not the lightweight whale.

I can remember the Round The Horne version of Moby Dick, with Kenneth Williams as Captain Ahab.

Ahab - "I got this wooden leg from Moby Dick".

Crew Member - "I bet it looked better on him than it does on you!"

That should fox our American friends.

You're right about the short chapters helping it along.

And the number of times I've had to bring out the dictionary! I wonder if you had to, as well.

(I'm tempted to post a few sentences and see if you understood them the first time you read them.)

Reaching for the dictionary wasn’t really an option as I was reading mainly on a beach in the Canaries, but I muddled through on context smile

...& Starbucks coffee took their name from the first-mate of the Pequod. Not a lot of people know that (in my Michael Caine voice).

I read Moby Dick as assigned reading as a junior in high school. I agree that it was a struggle to get through it. I wonder if I would have the patience to read it again, and whether I would get more out of it. Frankly, back then I read it as an adventure tale and let my English teacher fill in the symbolism of the whale and the novel's deeper meanings.

I was a forerunner of the non-traditional university student i.e. went back to school in my 30s and headed into the land of novels to prepare myself for the rigors of higher academia. Read through what I hated and didn't finish in h.s. (Ethan Frome, e.g. which I now loved), Sinclair Lewis' Main Street to make me feel like an Ivy Leaguer (I wasn't but I loved it, too) and a few others. Including Mr. Melville's tale of Capt. Ahab and the white whale. I tried, really tried but couldn't make it past two hundred pages. At least it increased my appreciation for how Messrs. Bradbury and Huston extracted its essence. Not to mention admiration.

Starbuck came from MOBY DICK?! I suppose you're gonna say Ishmail didn't come from LAVERNE AND SHIRLEY.

"Ishmail! Schlimazel! Hasenpfeffer Incorporated!"

Am I the only one whom thought it got its name from, um, a character on a 1978 TV series? embarrassment

I'd never heard of Starbucks until the late 80s.

Call Me Ishmail.

I see Tall Guy updated the novel's language for the cyber age...

Once again, I stalled out on this one.

I also skipped the opera chapter.

Maybe I'm destined never to read it?

Don't make me repeat my "lightweight whale" jibe. Oops, too late!
