Just today, 12/18/18, the score to the Sci-Fi film, 'Annihilation' was shortlisted for Oscar as 'Best Original Score'. I viewed the film months ago on Blu-ray and, at the time, thought how wonderful both the score and the special visual effects were. (The script was maddening, but what can you do?), and I'd personally never heard of Ben Salisbury and Geoff Barrow the composers. So today I went to Amazon and found that indeed, there was a soundtrack available as an import. Nearly everyone who rated the music as great but that a specific track titled 'The Alien' cuts-out midway through playing. I probably won't even care that much since I've only seen the film once. But, if you own this c.d, can you describe your 'listening experiences' of it? Thanks!

It looks like those reviews refer to the MP3 version. So the CD should be fine.

The film is on my Top 10 of the year, although not on the level of EX MACHINA from a couple of years ago (the Alex Garland/Barrow & Salisbury film before this one) -- which I consider one of the best of the entire 2010s, even.

The score is very intriguing. More in the film than on album, perhaps. I'm a sucker for such experimental, ambient soundscapes.

THANKS! Looking at the reviews now, I do see that those that had the MP3 versions of this score were indeed the ones who were having the problems. I didn't see that.

A friend of mine reviewed the film on Twitter in a single tweet:

"Annihilation (2018, dir. Alex Garland) - A meteor crashes to Earth and turns on a bunch of WinAmp plugins from the late 1990s"

I agree with his review, but I do love the score. I'm said that it was only a single CD release compared to the 2 CD release of Ex-Machina. I will pick up the CD eventually. It's only $9.99 from the Lakeshore Store, and they have some good deals on other ones too.

Thanks ryanpacquet for the links to the lakeshore shop. Never heard of it before and the price is LOWER than the price at Amazon, even taking into account for the shipping, I'd rather 'the store' get the money than Amazon. What I found right alongside the photo of the 'Annihilation' cd on the store's site was 'You were never Really Here' by Johnny Greenwood. I truly admired this film and enjoyed the score. (I didn't even know there WAS a soundtrack released to 'You Were Never Really Here'!)

Great! I also liked Trevor Morris' score to Castlevania (which is on Netflix). It's also there, and I highly recommend Jeff Russo's Star Trek Discovery scores too!

big grin
