It's funny, Die Hard 2 also takes place at Christmas (exactly one year later), & no one seems to think of that as a Christmas film.

Two things I never understood regarding Christmas films and "Die hard":

1) why set a story during Christmas when it's not essential to that story?
1a) why so hellbent on setting violent stories during Christmas when Christmas is not essential to that story?

2) what is everyone's love for "Die hard"? The second one had at least a "Airport" vibe about it and the third one somehow has somewhat of a "Pelham 123 feel" about it. The McClane character is an upleasant person and the action is of a "realism" other films get lambasted for.

Theres even a uk advert where they argue if diehard is xmas film.
Tbh any film is an xmas film.
If Connery Bonds were the go to xmas day movies then any film is. Who cares really.

Stu and Bill, you make good points.
It's definitely not a Christmas movie, anymore than about 90% of those showing now on the Hallmark Channel that I'm forced to watch.

To state the obvious, I've always assumed that since Die Hard sticks quite closely to Thorp's book, they chose to keep Christmas as a setting. In the book, the premise is that the protagonist is in town to celebrate with his daughter at her party and try to patch their strained relationship.
And, having Christmas as the setting and springboard for action at least somewhat sets it apart from the typical action flick, doesn't it?

I'm glad they kept the Christmas setting, as the film score wouldn't have been the same and likely not as wonderful. wink

I do. It's part of my Christmas viewing. Die Hard, Die Hard 2 and Lethal Weapon.

I think the Christmas setting for an action thriller was back at that time an interesting idea; it's also a great (and credible) setup that McClane would try to reconcile with his wife since, hey, it is Christmas. And it was a Christmas party, and he was not on the guest list, so it was relevant to the plot. Sure it could have been some other event, but everybody knows what Christmas is and that there are Christmas parties in corporations. If one views it as a "Christmas movie" or not, hey, that's up to whatever you consider a Christmas movie. I saw both DIE HARD movies (only once) in the summer (they were released in the summer, not in the winter), so I never particularly considered them Christmas movies... perhaps I should re-watch them at Christmas time. :-)

(1) It just happens to take place during Christmas time. I personally never saw it as a Christmas movie.
I think fans make it what they want it to be. Its more an urban legend.

(2) Its just a fantastic action movie with a very charismatic lead. I personally hate the second film, then went totally overboard with the violence and profanity. The third film was pretty hilarious. The series out lived its welcome after that.

I enjoyed the first two DIE HARD movies very much, more than the third.

Because the first movie in every series is seen as more special than the others? Because Die Harder is a lukewarm rehash of the original? Who knows?
