Love the new album, and John Takis' liner notes are excellent. I was interested to read how the filmmakers resisted studio pressure to add a song to the end title, and I love the way James Horner used Annie Lennox's wordless voice as a soulful, wordless choral presence – it's so powerful in 'The Dark Side of the Moon' and 'End Title,' and like Tori Amos on Patrick Doyle's "Great Expectations" score, it is so distinctly her. Just curious, does anyone know how Horner came to work with Lennox? To my knowledge, aside from her acting roles, Lennox has only leant her voice to one other film, although that was a more traditional song, for "The Return of the King."

Appreciate any reports from you first listeners about the new sound mix for this. I have the album and the promo and those two cover pretty much all the material I'd want from the movie, but it's such an aggressive reverb-heavy mix for an orchestral score, almost like a rock album. I like it and it's what I know and it serves those big moments especially well, but I'm curious to hear more thoughts on what we have on the new edition. Avatarded mentioned some additional details you can hear, but on the whole does it lose any oomph? I'd say no, it doesn't lose a thing. It gains clarity but not at the expense of the reverberating trumpet solos or deep bass tones. Just curious, does anyone know how Horner came to work with Lennox? To my knowledge, aside from her acting roles, Lennox has only leant her voice to one other film, although that was a more traditional song, for "The Return of the King." I can't remember the source, but I read that Horner wanted a recognizable voice to sing on those two cues, someone familiar to American audiences (despite her of course being English) and had his friend / woodwind player Tony Hinnigan come in to help with recording her vocals. The part about Hinnigan came from his website: http://www.tonyhinnigan.com/movies.php#movies But I really can't remember the specific source where I read about why Horner wanted her voice.

To make this clear: the mix is a lot more detailed than the OST, and from what I remember of the promo. Believe me there is no shortage of “oomph” on this set. It’s all improvement as far as I can hear. YMMV, but this sounds great to me.

Remember, if you order "Apollo 13", that you have to be patient. First it gets picked up, sorted at, delivered to a processing center, delivered to a distribution center, then to Cape Canaveral, blasted off into space, lands on the moon, safely returns to Earth after some problems, and then it arrives in your box where the jewel case will be cracked and the little thingies that hold the CD in place will be mostly broken and rattling around inside the case.

You're still hearing the quality increase. If a digital recording is done at 44k in the 1990s, a hi-resolution transfer from analog masters at 192k 20 years later will capture the recording information in greater detail, so if it's properly dithered back down to 44k 16bit, the clarity of the hi-res capture is preserved and is often noticeable to discerning ears.
