I never really got into earlier versions of the score. Listening now to this new version and it is lovely! Mine arrived Sunday with no issues. If anyone needs extra jewel cases, I remove most of my discs from the cases and have a bunch I'm about to unload, both single and double discs. I'm happy to give them away.

Appreciate any reports from you first listeners about the new sound mix for this. I have the album and the promo and those two cover pretty much all the material I'd want from the movie, but it's such an aggressive reverb-heavy mix for an orchestral score, almost like a rock album. I like it and it's what I know and it serves those big moments especially well, but I'm curious to hear more thoughts on what we have on the new edition. Avatarded mentioned some additional details you can hear, but on the whole does it lose any oomph?

Love the new album, and John Takis' liner notes are excellent. I was interested to read how the filmmakers resisted studio pressure to add a song to the end title, and I love the way James Horner used Annie Lennox's wordless voice as a soulful, wordless choral presence – it's so powerful in 'The Dark Side of the Moon' and 'End Title,' and like Tori Amos on Patrick Doyle's "Great Expectations" score, it is so distinctly her. Just curious, does anyone know how Horner came to work with Lennox? To my knowledge, aside from her acting roles, Lennox has only leant her voice to one other film, although that was a more traditional song, for "The Return of the King."

It must have been the reverb I hated so much in previous versions. It is gone now!

I'd say no, it doesn't lose a thing. It gains clarity but not at the expense of the reverberating trumpet solos or deep bass tones.

I can't remember the source, but I read that Horner wanted a recognizable voice to sing on those two cues, someone familiar to American audiences (despite her of course being English) and had his friend / woodwind player Tony Hinnigan come in to help with recording her vocals.

The part about Hinnigan came from his website:

http://www.tonyhinnigan.com/movies.php#movies

But I really can't remember the specific source where I read about why Horner wanted her voice.

Sirusjr, how much are you charging for the cases? I have a whole load of broken cases both single and double cases which need replacing. Assuming the price is right I would be happy to take them or at least some of them.

No charge, but if you are willing to pay for shipping, that's all I would charge. I have plenty of packing stuff. I wouldn't suggest getting everything, since I do have quite a lot that I haven't gotten rid of yet.

To make this clear: the mix is a lot more detailed than the OST, and from what I remember of the promo. Believe me there is no shortage of “oomph” on this set.

It’s all improvement as far as I can hear. YMMV, but this sounds great to me.

Remember, if you order "Apollo 13", that you have to be patient.

First it gets picked up, sorted at, delivered to a processing center, delivered to a distribution center, then to Cape Canaveral, blasted off into space, lands on the moon, safely returns to Earth after some problems, and then it arrives in your box where the jewel case will be cracked and the little thingies that hold the CD in place will be mostly broken and rattling around inside the case.

Mike Matessino accessed the 192k 24bit high-resolution transfers of Shawn Murphy’s original mixes on 1/2” tape...

That's nice for Mike, who unlike the rest of us, can listen to the hi-res material.

What exactly is irking you, Basil? That by virtue of his years of experience and excellence at mastering, Matessino gets to hear something you don't? That the sampling rate settled on in 1980 by the International Electrotechnical Commission Technical Committee is lower than you'd like? That the higher resolution SACD format never went mainstream? Because you're sure as hell being snarky about something, I just can't for the life of me figure out what it is.

Very simple. We're told by the labels we can't buy hi-res downloads because the studios won't allow it. Only CDs.
So telling us the CD is sourced from hi-res is a bit like telling visitors to the Tower of London that the Crown Jewels are on full display today, but you are permitted to only look at a photograph of them.

It is a bit of a predicament to be sure. Blu-Rays do this kind of stuff all the time. 'Restored/Remastered in 4K' even though the film is presented on a standard Blu-Ray and not on a UHD Blu-Ray that can present the film in 4K. Still, I know improved sound when I hear it and I wouldn't feel misled in the slightest if that was a selling point.

You're still hearing the quality increase. If a digital recording is done at 44k in the 1990s, a hi-resolution transfer from analog masters at 192k 20 years later will capture the recording information in greater detail, so if it's properly dithered back down to 44k 16bit, the clarity of the hi-res capture is preserved and is often noticeable to discerning ears.

It's relevant because in the right hands, sourcing from a 24-bit, higher-quality element can result in a finer end product – even when that product is reduced to 16-bit.

In the digital world (audio and video) it's well-known that starting with higher resolution is the best practice whenever possible. Just as with photochemical film origination, or analog audio (those LPs were never derived from other LPs, of course – but from higher-quality tapes.)
