just so you know, Varese indicates that there are now LESS THAN 50 copies of The Bride left.

if you don't have it, get it now. It's a good album...and cheap.

And this reminds me...are there any FSMs that we should all panic about right now?

Hmmm...I'd of thought the Ebay speculators would have bought them all up by now, as soon as Varese indicated there were only 100 left.

JJH: I am NOT a fan of Jarre's. In fact, I usually find his music cloying and WAY over-the-top (although, for some weird reason, I LOVE his score to Jacob's Ladder!). What is it about The Bride that I should spend my money on it? Thanks in advance for your time in responding to this question.

Hmm..well, to jump in here, SheriffJoe, your reasons for disliking Jarre (cloying and WAY over the top) are unfortunately present on "The Bride," IMHO. It gets my vote for "cheesiest love theme...ever." However, there are a few redeeming bits on the disc (a jaunty secondary theme and some knowing nods to Waxman's original "Bride of Frankenstein"), but overall probably not worth the $$ (although it IS value priced when compared to Varese's other club releases).

That's it for my 2 cents.

I loved Maurice Jarre's music, the composer has an unique style and his compositions is very original.
The Bride is an excellent score, one of Jarre's best score of 80's, richly orchestrated and with a spectacular performance of RPO.

I couldn't agree more with Jarre Fan - this is an excellent score with a stunning main theme beautifully performed by the RPO - one of my favourite Jarre scores. It might be only 30mins but its a great 30mins!

I like THE BRIDE, and I'm not a particular fan of Jarre. But it's way better than a lot of his syrupy romantic sludge (ONLY THE LONELY, ALMOST AN ANGEL) and the bargain price made it irresistible anyway. The end piece ("Together") is glorious.

NP: BOPHA! (James Horner). Ah, the perils of random selection.... smile

I would say that, generally, if you're not an admirer of Jarre's, then this disc won't persuade you.

but it's WAY better than any of they synth crud he as churning out at that time.
yeah, it is kinda corny in spots, but it does have glorious moments. I wasn't sorry to get it.

I, too, liked Jacob's Ladder.

and hell, if you don't like it, sell it on eBay for a tidy profit, and tell me my taste is all in my mouth.

:-)

It's old-fashioned crescendos, haunted romance and jaunty venturing, all nicely summed up in a lean, expertly orchestrated & performed 30 minutes.

I'd take this over the current state of affairs any day.

Two thumbs way up!

I'm hoping James Fitzpatrick will see this - now playing your excellent 2cd Notre Dame set, and in your liner notes, you say there were other sessions later on, due to reediting of the film.
Do you still have the tapes from CTS? Any chance you could revisit this ala' your Pope Joan & Thunderdome releases? Or is it stuck with Varese?
And, is there that much more there (alternates, etc)?

The Notre Dame set is beautiful , thank you for this gift! smile

But I have to ask...specifically what in the film that's not on the album would you want added?

In a way, that is what i was asking James.
Personally, for this score, for me....anything.
I always thought there was a lot of post-tinkering.

Off the top of my head, isn't there a film version of the main title, or is it just edited down in the film (The Bride track 1).
Isn't this a case where the album has more than the film?
This should be in print always IMO....so unashamed & heart on sleeve romantic, how can you not get caught up in this score??

I have no idea, but I missed out on the Varese Club release so a reissue would suit me just as well.

Got it. I just watched the film recently and while not complete, it didn't seem there was more than a minute of extra music. Some people seem to knee-jerk on an expansion without actually knowing the score well, so I always want to know if there's something I was missing or not.

Thank you very much for your reply James.
If you can, throw that thing onto a disc, make a few bucks - promise I'll buy another just because I love it so much!

I watched the film again a few months ago (it's not a bad flick either), and there was a brief synth cue over the opening Columbia logo, and variations on this cue pop-up here and there (though it could be the same cue, re-used). I didn't notice anything else not already on the existing album however.

I agree it is a terrific score, and it's clear Jarre was trying to do an homage to the music of "golden age" Hollywood. There's a distinctly Rozsa-esque quality to the main theme (both melodically and in the orchestration).
