A deluxe version could be done with the re-recorded album and the original film soundtrack. But, I am not sure if there is much more music that could be included in any subsequent release. A re-recording/original soundtrack release would be welcomed.

I'd buy it. I'm not that much of a James Horner fan but I like his early to mid-80's stuff. Also, how about a release of his score for WOLFEN? If you have most of the albums from his 80's scores (STAR TREK, ALIENS in particular), then you already have it... albeit in different form. heh, heh

Hmmm...were have I heard that comment before? It's odd that Horner bashers keep repeating the same statements over and over again.

the movie was made. And I thought it would be nice from Varese, if they would release a Deluxe Treatment of James Horner´s most beautiful score. Your thoughts? Philipp IMHO, It would be a waste of time and resources. There really isn't that much more music in the film that didn't appear on the album to start with and all of the highlights of the score appear on the album re-recording performed by the LSO conducted by Horner and IMHO it's as good, if not better then the OST recording. They'd be far better of releasing something that hasn't seen the light of day. Ford A. Thaxton

I'd like to find an affordable BRAINSTORM CD anyway; I only have a battered Varese cassette lying in a box somewhere. NP: BEING HUMAN (Michael Gibbs)

I have to agree with most of the above. I've never found this album lacking. The movie itself holds a special place for me. Back in 1983, it was the movie I was able to see at the Hollywood Cinerama Dome on a trip to L.A.. I had already seen the movie a couple of times elsewhere, but it really had its ultimate impact on that big, curved screen that took up most of your field of vision. And they even had the classic "Duck Dodgers" cartoon before the feature! Can't do much better than that.... The DVD, however, could be much improved. From what I understand (I haven't purchased it for this reason), they have played with the contrasting aspect ratios in a way that dilutes its intended impact. The original film had TWO aspect ratios: 1.85 for most of the story, then switching to widescreen 2.35 for the scenes shown from a character's POV while wearing the "device." This worked great in the theater, since the image onscreen actually increased during those POV scenes. (The sound also switched to full surround for those scenes, as well.) The DVD maintains the same width for both ratios, so that the 1.85 scenes actually appear LARGER, taking up a greater portion of the screen than the 2.35 scenes. Instead of knocking you back in your seat on their appearance (like in the theater), the 2.35 images SHRINK (relatively), minimizing their impact. The old Laserdisc, ironically enough, did maintain the proper perspective between the two ratios by "windowboxing" (black bars top and bottom, and on the sides) the 1.85 material, then using the full width of the screen for the 2.35. The image "height" was the same for both. (Unfortunately, all I have is a VHS dub of the LD.) Anyway, that's probably way more than any of you want to know. In short, I'd like to see a new DVD with the transfer done up right, and with some extras this time as well. --Mark

I have no problem with an album that has the album recording and the film cues re-mastered. Varese has done this on a number of albums now (Damien - Omen II, The Fury and Hawaii) and this really is the best way to present those scores. Neil

With all this negative Horner posting, perhaps you guys secretly like Horner. Aww, go on, admit it. I promise it won't hurt and you'll be a better person for it.
