Saw it at a used CD store for eight bucks? Any opinions? I listened to a couple tracks, didn't turn me on right away. Is there something I'm missing? Should I get this soundtrack?

If it's the expanded Arista CD, then you should definately buy it. It's dark and haunting and another Hermann masterpiece; essential listening.

By all means pick it up, it's a great score. It didn't really satisfy me the first time I listened to it, either. Luckily I don't let my first listens determine whether I'll listen to something again, because if I did, most of my Herrmann discs would have been tossed after only a single play...

I swear I've heard that 'theme' that's in "I Can't Sleep" and "$20 Bill" somewhere else. I thought it was the Beatles' "Fool on the Hill" for some reason, but that's not it... Must be some sort of aural deja vu.

A great score. Very psychological. On a par with Psycho for psychological effect.

Cheers

It is certainly a score of Herrmann's that needs to be listened to again and again to realy appreciate it.

FYI, the Arista expanded release contains 18 tracks.

Historically, if you are a fan of Herrmann's work, this is an important score to have as Herrmann died only hours after finishing the last recordings for TAXI DRIVER.

One of Bernard's best scores.

I find it to be fairly accessible on first listen, more so than some of Herrmann's scores for films depicting similar scenarios. If you like Herrmann, certainly worth giving it a shot at 8 bucks.

Have you ever seen the movie? Helps loads in better appreciating the music.

Don't quite see how that constitutes importance, per se...

Could this work of Herrmann's have a comprehensive renewal, with polish, spit and shine using the newest technologies?

The Arista is excellent, could that be the be all, end all publication?

It's my favourite of Benny's entire body of work.

If its the full score, then yes, and think minimalist Herrmann...requires multiple listens...its great!

Although I prefer Herrmann's "other score from 1976," I think TAXI DRIVER is superb. The expanded CD edition (released by Didier C. Deutsch) is the one to go for. The original Arista LP was such a disappointment, with side one conducted by somebody else.

Well, as I recall from A Heart At Fire's Center, Herrmann was seriously ill at the time, but refused to go home to complete the score on another session date. He stayed and finished conducting the score that night, so the Taxi Driver recording stands as a testament to his dedication to his craft.

The film is thus dedicated to Herrmann's memory.
