With all due respect to Sheriff Joe -- he was one of my first friends here, and is a stand-up guy -- the proverbial plug was pulled just a tad too soon on the Sally Field thread over there on the other side. "Too soon" being defined as, before I got a chance to put in my two cents. So here it is, and then I will say a word about the demise of that thread.
One of my favorite films of the 80's is ABSENCE OF MALICE, starring Sally, Paul Newman and an excellent supporting cast. She played a cynical newspaper reporter whose zeal for the story set in motion a string of unfortunate and ultimately tragic events. She was terrific, playing against type somewhat, and showed her skills admirably. I *REALLY* liked her! I do not like everything that she's done, but I do think she is talented and outstanding in the right roles.
I read through the now-defunct "Does anybody really like Sally Field" thread and can find only two flaws in it: (1) it was one of a proliferation of "Does anybody really like..." threads, and (2) it was on the wrong side of the board. I think it should have simply been moved over here, and I don't think that the "Sheriff's" irritation with "too many" similarly-named threads should be grounds for termination. The content in and of itself should be the thing, and this one was well within the bounds of good taste and appropriateness, as far as I could tell.
I liked ABSENCE OF MALICE as well. I liked the film and thought she was quite good in that movie. Quite honestly, i can't think of a better movie that I liked her in. Does that mean she stinks? Of course not. I have watched here stint on ER and liked her there as well.

I like her...I REALLY like her! Flying Nun was a great springboard to launch Sally into the viewing audience, but certainly Nun, Hooper and Bandit were just stepping stones and a growing experience for her. (Wasn't that little Gidget just so darn cute?!)Who can ever forget how surprised we were when she finally blossomed in Norma Rae? Man, did my repect for her as a serious actress skyrocket after that! Absence of Malice...wonderful! This lady can act! God, when she cries, I become a blithering idiot! She's just so believable, especially now in her seasoned years. BTW: My sister recently had occasion to rub elbows with her at the U.S. Open, and said that she was just a delightful and warm person.
While I remember TV's Gidget, I never watched it. The first time I recall seeing Sally was in 1967's The Way West. I liked her immediately. I've enjoyed her in so many films since then that I won't bother naming them all. I thought she was amazing in Lincoln!
IMO Sally Field exuded mucho sex appeal in Smokey and the Bandit, though it's probably because she was in the presence of Burt Reynolds' legendary cackle.
When I was a kid, I thought Absence of Malice was about some chick who went missing. (No joke).
Hah! One of my rare postings (as thread originator that is) from the Stone Age, bumped back into life. I love it! DavidinBerkeley obviously knows quality when he sees it. Still love ABSENCE OF MALICE but I haven't seen a thing with Sally since...
My missus was quite the look-a-like of Ms Field years ago. From that 70's era. There are pictures of her from the film HEROES where she's a dead ringer for my Carole. As Sally Field has gotten older, she's now the spit of Carole's sister. I like the way Sally Field has grown old naturally. If she's had plastic surgery, it's the best I've ever seen.
I remember seeing her naked in STAY HUNGRY. A long time ago, one of the first movies I ever watched on HBO.
What, really? Must find this film! Seriously, I didn't know not liking Sally Field was a thing. I grew up during her Flying Nun days. I always had a crush on her.
