In November, "Brannigan" has been released thru La La Land Records. But when it comes to the early Dominic Frontiere OST work, what will we find? Almost nothing... It's no secret that Frontiere used to be helped at the beginning of his career by Alfred Newman, music director of XXth Century Fox in the 1950's. Frontiere is better known by soundtrack fans for his 1960's committement on TV at Daystar Productions ("The Marriage-Go-Around", "Hero's Island", "Stoney Burke", "The Outer Limits") and QM Productions ("Skyfighters", "The New Breed", "Twelve O'Clock High", "The F.B.I.", The Invaders"). I just wonder why those wonders are not yet available?

Because nearly all of those shows and their
respective scores are owned by studios
(Universal, Paramount, etc.) that don't
want to release them. That's why. Not
only that, but quite a lot of music that
was composed for television was not properly
preserved, and no longer exists. As for
THE OUTER LIMITS - GNP released a cd of
Frontiere's music a few years ago, and
it's still available.

Actually Outer Limits is OOP, but some copies are still lurking around on ebay and the likes.

LLL hopes to rectify a great injustice and release more of Mr Frontiere's scores in the future. We had a blast working with him on Brannigan!

Most Daystar Productions are the properties of MGM/UA meaning Ted Turner. FSM teams up with them for some soundtracks as I can see.
I thank La La Land for their courage and support and hope they will release 1960's Frontiere scores.

I hope someone out there picks up the baton from GNP and releases a second volume of OUTER LIMITS music - "The Forms of Things Unknown" is something I've been waiting to have for years.

And if releasing latter day Frontiere is successful, how about re-releasing THE STUNT MAN and releasing THE GUMBALL RALLY?

I just made a CD-R of his score to THE AVIATOR off the Varese Lp. Most people would probably think I'm crazy to focus on that of all Frontiere scores, but I love it. I'm a sucker for flying music. A real CD with remastered sound is definitely called for on this title.

You are mistaken.

Most of the DAYSTAR proudctions (unless I'm seriously mistaken) are own by the current version of MGM (which is not owned by Turner).

And it wouldn't cost that much since the score was recorded in Germany.

I can't tell you how much I'm looking forward to BRANNIGAN! I'd love to see more of his work on CD in the future - so the best of luck.

The only score of Mr Frontiere's that I have - and that's on vinyl because its several years old - is WASHINGTON BEHIND CLOSED DOORS. This was a pretty good score for a tv series using quite a large studio orchestra (the players are all named on the sleeve). It was quite heavily influenced by the disco flavour of the time, but its a good score for all that.

Interestingly, Earle Hagen mentions in his autobiography that he thought Frontiere was "a good writer, but liked to use large orchestras". In tv terms, I guess that was a bit of a no-no!

I believe that a good portion of the Incubus score was recycled from The Outer Limits ep "Nightmare" which is, of course, available on the CD - an inspired choice by Neil Norman in my opinion.

By coincidence (the second FSM forum related coincidence in a couple of days - what's going on here?!), I ordered Incubus on DVD from Amazon yesterday. I want to hear how the score works, but I also need to catch Shatner emote in Esperanto. I have an odd feeling it could change my life.

I never even knew "Washington: Behind Closed Doors" had an LP release! I always liked the main title theme. How long is the recording?

About a half-hour or so...5 selections each side. It came out on ABC Records (and over here in the UK it was issued on vinyl and cassette by BBC Records, since it was the BBC showing the series at that time [1977]).

There's in the region of 65 players credited, including a lot of heavyweight jazzers/session musicians, eg Uan Rasey (CHINATOWN/MAN FROM UNCLE),Malcolm McNab(LETHAL WEAPON and loads of other scores),plus the likes of Dick Nash,Dennis Budimir,Chuck Domanico etc.

Frontiere arranged and conducted,as well as performing on synthesizer.

According to the sole site dedicated about INCUBUS' music, the film contains:
"The composed music by Dominic Frontiere is a blend of The Outer Limits' dreamlike scores, for instance, music editor John Caper, Jr. let us hear the samples from: 'Controlled Experiment' mixed with the Church's bells from 'A Feasibility Study' (editor's note: subsequent moody sound effects from that episode are used) in the opening credits; cues from 'Nightmare', 'The Mice', 'The Architects of Fear'
and even 'The Outer Limits' signature loop."

Anyway, this is the film that has turned Daystar Productions bankrupt. Poor Stevens!

Wonder who would have the rights for the "Washington: Behind Closed Doors" LP for a CD release today?

That sounds great. Is there anything that you could share with us about the experience of working with Mr Frontiere?

A true gentleman. He's very excited about the posibility of releasing his other scores. He's also very happy that the response to Brannigan has been as positve as it has been.

I'm still waiting for his "The Train Robbers" score. Good stuff there.
